Groningen is internationally known for its high-quality educational institutions. It is home to both the University of Groningen and the Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen. The city is located in the north of the Netherlands, approximately 2 ½ hours from Amsterdam airport by train. Groningen has around 200,000 inhabitants and around 50,000 of them are students. Groningen is famous within the Netherlands for being a student town. It is perhaps most famous internationally as “World Cycling City”, the only place in the world where as many as 57% of all journeys are made by bicycle. The centre of Groningen is completely closed off to cars making for a very different atmosphere to most Dutch cities.

Groningen is very safe and its inhabitants are the happiest in the Netherlands in terms of the facilities and amenities available to them. The presence of so many students in Groningen makes it one of the most culturally diverse cities in the whole of the Netherlands.

The two universities are central to Groningen’s importance (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen was founded in 1614) and are also the main reason for its reputation for raucous, student-centred nightlife. So, if you would like to go abroad but don’t want to miss out on the student experience, Groningen might be the place for you.

If English is the language of the study program/course you will be studying in Europe, you will be required to prove you have a sufficient level of knowledge of English in order for your application to be accepted.

Although the expected level of command of English may vary depending on the school and, above all, the study program or course, the usual average English language requirement you will be required to have to study in Europe is 550 - 587 points (paper-based TOEFL test), or 213 - 240 points (computer-based TOEFL test), or 79 - 95 points (Internet-based TOEFL test), or 6.5 - 7.0 score in the IELTS test.
If you have not taken either the TOEFL or IELTS tests and you would like to prove your level of knowledge of English with other exams, you will need to prove you have a level of command of English corresponding to the B1/B2 level (intermediate) according to the European language passport. The more competitive a course or study program is, the higher the level of knowledge of English will be.

Don’t meet the minimum English language requirement? You should always contact the course or program coordinator before you decide not to apply for it. In some cases, schools may be flexible with the language requirement and you may be allowed to improve your language skills while studying your course.
