Last week was an exciting week full of celebration for our program as the first Law and Society cohort graduated. The following day we welcomed the new cohort to Leiden Law School and had our first introductions.

Congratulations to the graduating class of 2020-2021 and good luck to all new students for the year to come!

Meet Maryla E. Klajn MSc, Teaching Assistant for Lawmaking, Politics and Society/Guest lecturer.

"I believe this is a unique program which brings together motivated young people from all over the world, and draws on their different experiences to showcase the links between legal and social sciences."

Maryla's area of expertise is in qualitative methodology (especially critical discourse analysis), as well as the phenomenon of ‘crimmigration’.

Meet Law and Society student Maíra Neves de Araujo Magalhãe.

I am a Brazilian lawyer living in Rotterdam since 2019. I have graduated from Law School at Rio de Janeiro’s State University (UERJ). As an attorney, I have predominantly been working with private Law and Civil procedure, but I have also worked with Tax Law and Succession Law as an assistant lawyer for Rio de Janeiro’s municipality. I have also worked as a volunteer conciliator and later as a Rio de Janeiro Minor Courts judge assistant.

My favorite master course was ‘Foundations’, as the course introduced us to core issues developed by the other courses. Amongst inspiring professors and lecturers, my favorite was Chase Burton, who dedicated his classes to making students understand relevant socio legal concepts and theories.

I also want to highlight the ‘movie nights’, where we could see thought-provoking movies and documentaries, and the lecturer Bernardo Almeida linked the plot to courses content, fostering great discussions and students’ engagement.

My thesis is about freedom of expression and the right to information as human rights, and the spread of fake news on social media. Therefore, I believe that some discussions on digital rights would be interesting for this master program.

Meet Professor Marieke Kluin, course coordinator and lecturer for the elective Regulation and Compliance.

"The Master Law & Society is a unique program with an interdisciplinary view on governance and global development. My favorite part about the Regulation and Compliance course is teaching on regulatory behavior of corporations and field level inspectors in action."

Meet Law & Society student Hannah ten Have from the Netherlands.

“The thing I enjoyed most during this master was the freedom of choice regarding the thesis topic. In my case I settled on a topic that is often not talked about and sometimes considered to be controversial. The freedom to use my thesis a tool to open the conversation around Menstrual Inequality, Period Poverty and the Menstrual Stigma is one thing that I believe is a very valuable aspect I got out of the master Law & Society.”

Meet Professor Carolien Jacobs, Coordinator of the Thesis Proposal Course and Master’s Thesis, and Lecturer in the elective ‘Challenges of Globalisation, Migration and Cross-Border Mobility’.

“Although online teaching this past year was quite challenging for all of us – both students and teachers – I very much enjoyed the possibility it offered us to invite guests from different parts of the world to present in our elective; from a policy advisor in Vienna, to a South Sudanese refugee in Uganda, and a researcher in Iran.”

Meet Law & Society student Alma Saez Portillo from Spain.

"I am currently writing my thesis on the use of social media as a feminist platform to challenge r**e culture and r**e law. Whilst doing this master, and writing this thesis, I have realised that I want to pursue a professional career in defending and protecting women’s rights. I am grateful for this master as it has helped me greatly understand the complexity of law in society and vice versa."

Meet Professor Azubike Chinwuba Onuora-Oguno, Lecturer of Mobilizing Rights and Social Justice.

“My favorite part about the course that I teach is the inclusivity aspect of development by ensuring that the rights of persons with disability are well protected, promoted and fulfilled. It is very key to contextualise how laws are going to be engaged to mobilise the rights contained in them and drive development.”

Meet Law & Society student Büşra Dursun from the Netherlands & Turkey.

"It was interesting to follow an elective called Mobilizing Rights & Social Justice with the ISS at Erasmus University, where we had different guest lecturers. Particularly, Prof. Ann Skelton who is the Education Chair @ UNESCO, has inspired me enormously with her passion, experiences, and extensive knowledge."

"For my thesis, I had the chance to interview EDPS Director Leonardo Cervara Navas and Ass. Prof. Thibault Schrepel. They have contributed a lot to my research with their valuable insights. Engaging with real people who are specialized around the same topic of your thesis is very rewarding other than only reading and writing most of the time. It was reaffirming for me why I started writing about my research topic in the first place. My thesis is about how digital citizens understand digital rights and mobilize against digital surveillance with it."

"To me, LSA Leiden (study association) was an interesting experience. Having this unique opportunity to bring the students together with the advisory board members, and of course, inviting our very own teaching staff outside of the class to our events was a great pleasure this year."

Meet Professor Janine Ubink, Director of the Master!

“This is a unique programme in Europe, or really in the world. Within Europe, there are very few Law and Society masters, and those that exist are mainly pick and choose menus from several departments rather that well-structured, coordinated and comprehensive programs. There are Law and Society masters in the US, but their focus is largely American / western. Our global focus, originating form a strong belief that literature, case studies, and theories from the global north and global south should speak to each other, and enhance our understanding of law and society, is truly unique. We at the Van Vollenhoven institute, also follow this belief in our research.”

Meet Law & Society student Widya, from Indonesia.

“This MSc program is my second master's for me, and I have a legal background. For me, this master's has been an enjoyable intellectual experience and a good 'gap' year after doing my work for some years.

This program is truly an eye-opener that helps me understand how the black letter law is operationalized in reality. I feel that this program will be essential for future lawyers or anyone who wants to have a legal career. Because the law, in fact, will always intersect with various social phenomena, thus learning law thoroughly needs an interdisciplinary approach, which is the focus of this study.

It is tough to mention one favorite course and professor because I feel like I like them all, but if I must, I would say Legal Pluralism in Global North and Global South is my favorite course, and prof. Janine Ubink is my favorite professor. In this course, I also have a memorable group assignment in which we had to present about inheritance law in my country, which is very pluralistic and can be said as a lab for legal pluralism.

I am writing my thesis about land tenure security in Indonesia; it is exciting for me because I take a case study from my hometown in Surabaya. I am sure that this program will bridge me to many exciting journeys and opportunities in the future.”

Meet Chase Burton, Assistant Professor of Law and Society!

I'm currently working on an international collaboration examining the circular effects whereby legal regimes of tied fixed term employment produce pools of contingent workers, which in turn enables legal regimes of contingent employment. It's a fascinating and creative inquiry outside of traditional disciplinary boundaries, and precisely the sort of project that attracted me to law and society in the first place. I've just presented an early draft at the Law and Society Association conference, and I'm feeling more energized than ever!
