Hi Herman, Mark and Tom! 👋🏼 What's the story behind the famous FSW Christmas tree? 🎄

Herman (not pictured): "This is the fifth year Mark (first picture) and I are setting up the Christmas tree in the central hall. It takes approximately two days to set it up and decorate it. 🎅🏼 Luckily, Tom (second picture) joined to help us this year. He takes care of the decorations in the top of the tree. Mark is very tall, he doesn't need to climb a ladder to get to the highest branches. Together we form a great team!" 💪🏼

"The tree is not a real one: it consists of steel material which makes it easy to reuse it. ♻ It also makes it possible to climb the tree if you want. 😆 I wouldn't recommend it though, the branches will hurt you!" 🤕

In this podcast, psychologists Lara Wierenga and Marieke Bos dissect persistent and oversimplified myths about s*x and gender differences in the brain and how these differences relate to mental health.

Hi Luigi, Michelepio and Angelo! 👋🏼 Since you are doing research in memory, what is your first memory of your life? 💭

Luigi: "Even-though it's not our area of research, smell and memory go hand in hand. My first memory consists of being at my home in Italy, where we had a chimney. During the winter days, we made a fire. When I smell burnt wood, I often think of that." ❄

Michelepio: "Tomato sauce reminds me of my home. My mother and grandmother made it out of fresh tomatoes. We call it a 'ragu'. I did try the dutch 'stamppot', but I prefer my mother's ragu!" 🍅

Angelo: "I think my first memory is a false one actually! My brother was jealous of me so he pushed me off the high-chair. I was only three years old, just before the time when people start to consciously remember things. Later in life he told me this story and I think that's why my mind made a memory of it." 🧠

Hi Rhuari'luana! 👋🏻 What are you busy with right now?

"Tomorrow is the launch of the POPOUT Academia and I'm very excited about it. We have five different speakers, including myself, and there will be a q***r art exhibition with photography and interviews. And free q***r and feminist books!

It's also Purple Friday, which is an initiative started by q***r students and their allies to show support for the LGBTQIA+ community by wearing purple 💜 Yes, it's that easy to be supportive! I know, right? Well... I just ran around town looking for something purple, because I don't actually own anything purple except for my coat 😅

I am nervous. I mean, I am more excited than nervous. But this is a very difficult and emotional week for me, because today is the anniversary of my dad's death. So I'm a bit nervous about letting my emotions maybe get the better of me. You know, we're doing something very important for the community. And my dad would've been very proud."

Do these pictures look familiar to you?👀 All pictures show us "People of Leiden". By looking at the exhibition, you can learn about habits of citizens of Leiden. 🏙 You can find them on the first floor at the FSW building to have a look!

For example, the first picture shows the swing ride, a popular attraction at the yearly city-wide party Leidens Ontzet.🎡 You can also spot a picture of the Rapenburg Race, a swim race where hundreds of people swim through the biggest canal in the city to raise money for a good cause.🏊🏻‍♀️

Gefeliciteerd met je promotie, Loes Janssen! 🎓 Zij onderzocht de relatie tussen stemming en de ervaring van de opvoeding, zowel door de ouder als het kind. Die kan variëren per gezin, gezinslid en zelf per moment.

Blijf met elkaar praten, is een advies van Janssen. 'Soms voelt dat misschien geforceerd en soms zul je als ouder van je kind niks terugkrijgen. Maar soms ook wel. Luister zonder oordeel, pas dan kom je te weten waar iemand behoefte aan heeft.' 👂🏻

"I recently 'broke up' with my bestie. She made mean comments towards black people. At the time I was too stunned to react, so I couldn't express myself the way I wanted to. I just stopped talking to her. We used to talk everyday, I've known her since high school. I feel like it's not my place to educate her. Educate yourself better, recognise your privilege, and acknowledge the struggles of others."

Hi Luc! 👋🏻 What are your experiences with bullying?

"It mostly manifested as exclusion. I definitely wasn't the only one who fell victim to that, when we were twelve or thirteen. It was mainly about whether or not you were a member of the local hockey club, that's how that went.

Now I think it was about us versus not-us, like finding a sort of identity. Looking back, it's kind of silly to attach so much value to whether or not you were a hockey club member. But when you're thirteen, everyone is constantly talking about where you belong. For me, it turned out alright though. At some point I joined the school literature club and debate clubs. And as it turned out, the people I met there were a lot of fun. Yeah, I think I found 'my people' there."

Gefeliciteerd met je promotie, Charlotte de Roon! 🎓 Ze onderzocht het functioneren van politieke jongerenorganisaties in Nederland.

Welke rol vervullen deze organisaties in ons politieke bestel? In hoeverre zijn de 'jongerenpartijen' representatief? En hoe toekomstbestendig zijn deze organisaties?

'Ik had verwacht dat het functioneren van deze politieke jongerenorganisaties zou zijn afgenomen,' aldus de Roon. 'Maar mijn verwachting is niet uitgekomen. Deze organisaties wisten in de jaren 2010 nog steeds jongeren te mobiliseren.'

Hi Yke! 👋🏼 How was your coming out experience? 🏳️‍🌈

"It wasn't easy. I've been raised in a very Reformed household, so it was kind of a taboo subject. But still, it went okay if you take that environment into account - I'm trying to keep it light right now. Of course I did get some typical reactions, such as: what did we do wrong? They already had a married-with-children future in mind for me. That was when I came out as bis*xual.

Two years later, I came out as transgender. They were very supportive by then, they had learned a lot in that time. How rough it must have been for you, they said, thank you for telling us. It took me months before I had the courage to tell them. I wrote a letter explaining how I felt and I read it to them. They just sat and listened for ten minutes. I didn't need to think about what I was going to say, I had the chance to prepare it in advance. It all helped to make it a positive experience. Despite everything, coming out can be nice.

Now that I'm through the chaos of transition, I feel more confident and free. It's not as hard as it was to talk about it. But if you're struggling with this too and you need time, take it. You don't have to be fast. People don't need to know it immediately. Of course you can also shout it from the rooftops if that's what you want. It's something that's entirely yours. Be kind to yourself.”

Het is ! De meeste kinderen leren lezen tussen de 5 en 8 jaar. Maar wist je dat ook baby's en peuters er baat bij hebben als ze voorgelezen worden? 📖

Natuurlijk zijn prentenboeken leuk om naar te kijken, maar voorlezen is ook goed voor de taalontwikkeling. Schrijftaal is namelijk rijker, gevarieerder en complexer dan spreektaal. 📚

Het is de Week van de Opvoeding! Dit is een initiatief van het Nederlands Jeugdinstituut. 🧒🏼

Opvoeden is niet eenvoudig. Een van de vraagstukken waar ouders tegenwoordig tegenaanlopen, is hoe je een kind opvoedt zonder vooroordelen, bijvoorbeeld racisme. Werkt het beter om verschillen in huidskleur te benoemen, of om 'kleurenblind' te zijn en ze te negeren?

Pedagoog Judi Mesman schreef er een boek over: Opgroeien in kleur. Haar standpunt: kleurenblind opvoeden werkt niet. Maak vooroordelen en racisme juist bespreekbaar in de opvoeding. 🗣️

Hi Lenny! 👋🏻 What brings you back to university?

"I've been in the army for a very long time. After 18 years, they sent me back to school. For my management development programme, I'm currently studying at . The army wants to bring in new knowledge, so I'm exempt from service. First I did a pre-master and master Sociology in Tilburg, and last year I did a pre-master in Psychology here. When I'm done here, I’ll return to the army as an officer and continue my career.

I like it a lot, but the transition from working to fulltime studying is a challenge – I'm 40 years old. Last year I attended classes with students under 18. It makes you realise you're in a totally different stage of life, but in another way it's also enriching. I have to unlearn so many things. Young people think so differently. They ask themselves: how do I want to live my life? Studying when you already have your affairs in order is a different experience than studying when you're also trying to figure out how you want to live.

Apart from all technological novelties they taught me, I was positively surprised by the way they are socially involved. This generation is often branded as self-centred, but when I talk to them, they speak of values we really need for the future. If these are the students that will be in charge in the future, I think that would be a great development."

Last Sunday, the city of Leiden turned off all lights for the Seeing Stars Project. 🌃 In the dark, we could spot twinkling stars in the sky - or are there monsters hiding around every corner?

Many children are afraid of the dark. It's even one of the most common fears in children aged 3 to 5 years old. What can you do to help a scared child? 😨

"Always take your child's fears seriously," says psychologist Anke Klein. She recommends giving control to the child: "Children are often very inventive in finding creative solutions." 🔦
