Leiden Declaration on AI in Mathematics traces its origins to Lorentz Center workshop

A new international declaration on the responsible use of artificial intelligence in mathematics has been released, calling for transparency, accountability, and the preservation of human understanding in mathematical research.

The declaration argues that AI can be a valuable tool but insists that mathematicians remain responsible for the correctness, originality, and interpretation of their work. It also calls for clear disclosure of AI use and highlights concerns about attribution, reproducibility, and the long-term health of mathematical culture.

Workshop
The initiative began at a workshop hosted by the Lorentz Center. The workshop Mechanization and Mathematical Research brought together mathematicians, computer scientists, philosophers, social scientists, and policymakers to reflect on how rapid advances in AI are reshaping mathematical research and to discuss how the mathematical community should respond.

During the eight months following the conference, a smaller working group, brought together by Jim Portegies of the Eindhoven University of Technology, developed this Declaration, with extensive feedback from the mathematical community.

This declaration calls for action to address the challenges posed by the use of artificial intelligence within mathematics research.

We would like to draw your attention to this great video of the workshop “Roadmap to the Exploration of Venus Habitability”, recently held at the Lorentz Center. It perfectly illustrates what a workshop at the Lorentz Center is like. In addition, the topic itself is more than worth watching!

On 9-13 February 2026, scientists met at the Lorentz Centre in Leiden, the Netherlands, to explore past and present conditions for habitability on Venus. The...

Call for Nominations Distinguished NIAS-Lorentz Fellowship 2027 - 2028 is open!

The DNLF is awarded annually to a leading researcher to work on innovative research that brings together perspectives from the humanities and/or social sciences with the natural and/or technological sciences. Distinguished NIAS Lorentz Fellows may be nominated by leading figures in the Dutch academic community.

A Distinguished NIAS Lorentz Fellowship consists of:
- A fellowship at Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIAS-KNAW) for 5 months from September 2027 – January 2028. It includes a private office and participation in a diverse and interdisciplinary community and, if applicable, either accommodation or travel expenses.
- A personal stipend or, for scholars affiliated to a Dutch university or research institute, a Dutch University Grant, given to the institution.
- A workshop at the Lorentz Center on the fellowship topic, with full organizational support and a budget of € 20,000.

The submission deadline is 16 March 2026, 12.00 noon CET.

Now open: eScience Center - Lorentz Competition 2025!

The Lorentz Center and the Netherlands eScience Center invite researchers to join the eScience Center - Lorentz Competition 2025.

This year the focus is on:
Advancing AI Techniques for Scientific Research and Scholarship

AI currently impacts nearly every scientific domain and beyond. Notably, the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded “for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks.” This call focuses on the development and sustainability of research software and the ecosystems that support the application of AI to any scientific discipline.

We look forward to receiving your (1-page) expression of interest by 17 October 2025.

For more information on how to submit, please see the eScience Center - Lorentz Competition page on our website: https://bit.ly/4fCmx1a
