And we couldn't agree more!! We're very proud to tell you that our prof. David Fontijn has been announced as one of the top three lecturers at Leiden University!

Amazing! David Fontijn's students nominated him for the Leiden University Teaching Prize in reward for his innovative ways of online teaching.

In the corona-year 2020-2021, Professor Fontijn taught the course How Deep History Shaped the Human World. ‘The whole course was an experiment in itself. It is one of the first times that I gave a course on the prehistory of the entire world.’

🇳🇱 En aan al het goede komt een eind! Gisteren namen we afscheid van onze laatste groep studenten! De fieldschool van dit jaar is weer succesvol afgesloten.
En als laatste groep kregen ze een college in het veld van de kersverse dr. Arjan Louwen. Als bonus mochten ze de kringgreppel couperen en afwerken.

🇬🇧 And all good things come to an end! Yesterday we said goodbye to our last group of students! This year's field school has been successfully completed again.
And as the last group they got a lecture in the field from the brand new Dr. Arjan Louwen. As bonus they were allowed to section the circular trench around the burial mound.

🇳🇱 De eennalaatste dag van ons veldwerk: onze studenten leren de laatste basisvaardigheden aan: couperen! In de ochtend maakten ze nog de vlaktekening af, daarna mochten ze onder leiding van dr Mark Driessen leren couperen!

🇬🇧 The second last day of our fieldschool: our students were learning the last basic skills: sectioning! In the morning they finished the level drawing, after which they learned how to section under the guidance of Dr Mark Driessen!

🇳🇱 Jaah!! Max en Shreyashi hadden een vondst, een vuurstenen schrabber!! Onze opgraving heeft dan wel drie kringgreppels, maar tot nu toe waren er nog maar vier bronstijdscherfjes gevonden.

Tijdens het vlak schaven kwam onze decaan Jan Kolen langs op de opgraving. Er werd meteen van de gelegenheid gebruik gemaakt om een veldoverleg te houden over de fieldschool van volgend jaar, want ook die voorbereidingen gaan heel langzaam maar zeker van start.

🇬🇧 Yeahh!!! Max and Shreyashi found a flint scraper!!! Our excavation may have three circular trenches around burial mounds, but only four Bronze Age sherds had been found so far.

While skimming the level, our dean Jan Kolen stopped by the excavation. The opportunity was taken to have a field meeting about next year's field school, as these preparations are also slowly but surely getting underway.

🇳🇱 En de laatste "profielendinsdag". Iedere week worden studenten door het hele opgravingsproces genomen en leren ze de basistechnieken. Op dinsdag is het altijd de b***t aan het onderwerp... -wie onze social media gevolgd heeft, weet dit vast😉! - .... "profielen"!

Joanne Mol legt ze de opbouw van het profiel uit, ook in relatie met de landschappelijke processen van de site. De studenten leren vervolgens het profiel af te steken en alle stappen van het documenteren van het putprofiel!

🇬🇧 And the last "profile Tuesday". Each week students are taken through the entire excavation process and taught the basic techniques. On Tuesday, it's always the turn of the topic.... -those who have been following our social media probably know this😉 ! - .... "profiles!"

Joanne Mol explains to our students the different layers in the profile, what this tells about the landscape formation processes of the site, the students then learn how to clean the profile and all the steps of documenting the trench profile!

🇳🇱 Vandaag startte alweer de laatste groep studenten met hun COVID-proofe veldwerk. Wel met wat minder mooi weer dan de vorige drie groepen... 's Ochtends moest dan ook eerst het zeil, waaronder geschuild kan worden, ontdaan worden van al het water dat erin was blijven hangen (met dank aan onze veldwerkleiding Arjan & Maaike, en aanhang, die gisteren het zeil weer opgehangen hadden, omdat het naar beneden was gekomen door de hevige regenbuien vrijdag!!)

Maar de studenten lieten zich niet uit het veld regenen, euhh... slaan! Na instructie van alle docenten, ging de helft aan de slag met leren boren en de andere helft met putten uitzetten!

🇬🇧 Today already the last group of students started their COVID-proof fieldwork. However, the weather gods wre not as benevolent as they had been to the previous three groups ... In the morning the tarp, under which they can shelter, had to be emptied of all the water that had poured in and straightened out (big thanks to our fieldwork leaders Arjan & Maaike, and their supporters, who hung the tarp up again yesterday, because it was torn down during the heavy rainfall on Friday!)

But the students did not let the rain beat them! After instruction from all lecturers, half of the group went to Joanne Mol and Maaike de Waal, to learn how to core and the other half practiced plotting trenches with Eric Dullaart and Femke Tomas!

🇳🇱 Afgelopen maandag kwam Land vol Archeologie bij ons filmen. Ze interviewden onze studenten over hun eerste dag veldwerk voor de uitzending van afgelopen vrijdag. Heb je 'm gemist? Geen zorgen! Je kunt de aflevering op YouTube nog bekijken, met op ca. 41.40 minuten een kijkje in de keuken bij onze fieldschool en op 15 min de prachtige, gereconstrueerde jurk van Slabroekse Heide waar onder anderen onze collega's Yvonne Lammers-Keijsers, Sasja van der Vaart-Verschoof en Richard Jansen (zonder Instagram of Facebook) aan hebben meegewerkt!

🇬🇧 This past Monday, Land Vol van Archeologie came to film our fieldschool. They interviewed our students about their first day of fieldwork for last Friday's broadcast. Did you miss it? No worries! 🇳🇱 Gisteren was alweer de laatste dag voor onze vijfde groep studenten! In de ochtend maakten ze nog hun coupes af en in de middag mochten de studenten de kringgreppel van de gevonden grafheuvel couperen en laag voor laag verdiepen. Helaas is er niets te vinden, de oorspronkelijke heuvel is al lang geleden verploegd.
Paul van de Helm, van Archol, gaf ze uitleg over de opbouw van de kringgreppel en hoe bemonsteren in zijn werk gaat.

Ook dit was weer een supergroep! Ze pakten alles snel op, stelden veel vragen en zijn klaar voor de volgende stap!

🇬🇧 Yesterday was already the last day for our fifth group of students! In the morning they finished their sections of the ditch and in the afternoon the students were allowed to section the circular ditch around the burial mound and deepen it layer by layer. Unfortunately, nothing could be found; the original mound has long since been plowed.
Paul van de Helm, of Archol, explained to them the structure of the ditch around the burial mound and how sampling works.

Also this was a group of awesome students! They picked up everything quickly, asked lots of questions, and are ready for the next step!

🇳🇱 Vroeg opstaan in verband met het tropenrooster dat we vandaag hanteerden! Om half acht was iedereen stipt op tijd op de site! De studenten hebben vandaag hun vlaktekening afgemaakt en een begin gemaakt met leren couperen.

Rond een uur of half drie werd het echt te heet en zijn we weer op huis aangegaan. Precies op tijd voor de staf om aan te kunnen sluiten bij de online verdediging van Arjan Louwens proefschrift!! Van harte, dr. Louwen!!

🇬🇧 Getting up early because of the tropical schedule we had today! At 7:30 everyone was on site! The students have finished their drawing of the trench level today and made a start with learning how to section a feature.

Around half past two it really got too hot to continue working and we went home. Just in time for the staff to join the online defense of Arjan Louwens PhD-thesis! Congratulations, Dr. Louwen!

🇳🇱 Een warme dag in het veld vandaag!! Onze studenten fietsten fanatiek 13 kilometer naar de site deze ochtend om vervolgens daar te oefenen met de total station, hun profielen inmeten om vervolgens, na het instructiecollege van Mark Driessen en Maaike de Waal, aan de slag te gaan met vlak schaven en documenteren!

Morgen tropenrooster: 06.30 uur op de fiets...😱!

🇬🇧 A hot day in the field today!!! Our students biked 13 kilometers to the site this morning to practice there with the total station, measure their profiles and then, after the instructionlecture by Mark Driessen and Maaike de Waal, got to work on skimming the level and documenting it!

Tropical schedule tomorrow: 6:30 a.m. on the bike...😱!

🇳🇱 Vandaag startten we met een college in het veld door professor Harry Fokkens, die deze week bij ons in het veld staat! Maaike de Waal gaf vervolgens uitleg over het afsteken en documenteren van de putprofielen, waarna onze studenten dit in de praktijk brachten!
De dag werd afgesloten door een college van Joanne Mol, onze geologe, over de landschappelijke vorming van de site.

🇬🇧 Today we started with a lecture in the field by professor Harry Fokkens, who is joining us in the field this week! Maaike de Waal then explained the cleaning and documenting of the trench profiles, after which our students put this into practice!
The day ended with a lecture by Joanne Mol, our geologist, on the landscape formation of the site.
