A remarkable story: during an internship in Thailand student Jory van Thiel was spat in the eyes by a venomous spitting cobra. It gave him an idea for research, which he carried out as an internship at the Institute of Biology Leiden together with biology student Roel Wouters. We all love vanilla as a fragrance and as a flavour, all across the world 🥤 Vanilla comes from vanilla plants, which are grown in Madagascar, for example. Shahnoo Khoyratty of the Institute of Biology Leiden will defend his thesis today on the role that fungi play in making vanilla. They are essential! Fighting an exotic species with another exotic species: yesterday, thousands of Japanese knotweed psyllids were released on several locations in the Netherlands to combat the rampant Asian knotweed. The psyllid has an appetite for nothing but Asian knotweeds, which makes it safe to release in nature. He receives an XS grant from NWO for this bold research. The Open Competition Domain Science - XS grant is meant for adventurous research that can quickly analyse a promising idea.

Why do inflammatory body cells appear to 'contaminate' their neighbouring cells, which causes them to die too? It is a major issue in inflammatory diseases and their treatment. Thanks to an XS grant from NWO, Monica Varela from the Institute of Biology Leiden can now investigate this 'contagiousness'. This may lead to new insights into how to treat inflammatory diseases.
