My Career Story - Arianna Pranger
The last chapter of my PhD thesis, next to a full time job, challenged me on a personal level. I felt that I had no other choice than to change something in my (working) life and decided to follow my intuition. And then, everything suddenly went by itself. I became super excited most of my working days and I was more productive than ever before, when I decided to go for what really excited me: education. 'Unfortunately' I didn't win a million euros, but I did say goodbye to my car because of a lower salary. Most friendships became even closer, but there were also people who wanted to protect me - I was about to get a permanent contract as a hospital pharmacist -, people who did not understand, or who were starting to understand when I won the faculty and also the university teaching prize within a year after I made my decision. With no educational background, I felt like an "imposter" at the national teacher of the year election in that same year, but I also felt that it was the right choice. Remarkably, even more like-minded people came my way, which only fueled my enthusiasm for educational innovation. The practical experience gained as a hospital pharmacist came in handy for pharmacy education. It became a unique combination of education and of content I am excited about.
This personal process also gave me the tools to better support students in their journey. I also realized that everybody needs a small support group to mirror your personal career path every now and then. Find inspiring people who also do understand that no successful career path is a flatline (luckily), but a personal journey of lows and highs!
