What a week in Geneva! ✨

The annual study trip to Geneva for students of the Advanced Studies in International Children’s Rights has come to an end after five inspiring days of learning, exchange, and engagement. 🌍

Here is what the week looked like:
🔹Monday – Welcome to Geneva! 👋 Meeting with Child Identity Protection, a tour of the Palais des Nations, and a group dinner at La Mère Royaume, made even more special by the presence of two of our alumnae, Begüm Şimşek and Rachele Zamperini.
🔹Tuesday – Visit to Palais Wilson for conversations on the work of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child and the broader work of the UN on children’s rights, with contributions from the Secretariat, UNICEF, Child Rights Connect, and Defence for Children. Students also presented their child-friendly versions of selected Views and Inquiries of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, developed as part of the Advanced LL.M. in International Children’s Rights.👏
The day continued with visits to Defence for Children International and Plan International, where students had the opportunity to learn more about children’s rights advocacy and engagement at the international level. 🤝
🔹 Wednesday – Students visited the Palais des Nations for a session on the Special Procedures of the United Nations Human Rights Council, supported by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. A particular highlight of the day was attending the Universal Periodic Review of Belgium and seeing an important United Nations human rights mechanism in action.
🔹 Thursday – The day included visits to International Social Service and Save the Children, offering students further insights into the work of organisations active in the promotion and protection of children’s rights. The day concluded with a gathering to celebrate a wonderful and enriching week together in Geneva.
🔹 Friday – On the final day, students visited the Red Cross Museum, bringing the study trip to a meaningful close and offering one final moment to reflect on humanitarian action.

A big thank you to all the organisations and experts who contributed to this year’s study trip and helped make the programme so enriching. And a special thank you to our students for bringing such curiosity, energy, and commitment throughout the week! 👏

October was a full and inspiring month for the students of the Advanced Studies in International Children’s Rights programme!

As part of the Children in the Justice System course, our students had the opportunity to visit two key institutions central to the child justice system in the Netherlands context:

- 👥 a youth institution focused on the rehabilitation of children in conflict with the law, and
- 👮‍♀️ a police station with a dedicated child-friendly interview room.

During the first visit, students explored the facility and engaged with legal and psychology experts to understand how integration and rehabilitation are supported in practice. At the police station, they learned from officers specialized in interviewing children and gained insight into how interviews with child victims and witnesses are conducted, and the measures taken to ensure these processes remain child-sensitive and rights-based.

Both visits offered invaluable opportunities to connect theory with practice and deepened students’ understanding and reflections of how child rights frameworks are implemented in national contexts. 🌟

A heartfelt thank-you to our hosts for their openness and dedication, and to our students for their thoughtful questions, curiosity, and continued commitment to advancing children’s rights worldwide! 🌍✨

Second monthly meeting of the year! 🎓

Last week we had the honour of hosting Dr. Noam Peleg, Associate Professor and Director – Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at the Faculty of Law and Justice at the University of New South Wales, Sydney.

In an inspiring lecture, “Children, Gaza, and the Merit of the UNCRC,” Dr. Peleg revisited the historical development of international children’s rights law and interrogated whether the Convention’s articulation of the “inherent right to life” (Article 6(1)) and the rights to survival and development (Article 6(2)) retain substantive meaning in the context of the armed conflict in Gaza (with a recent ceasefire) and its disproportionate impact on Palestinian children.

The talk raised pressing questions about the normative force of the UNCRC, especially its guarantee of non-discrimination and its core principle that all children are entitled to children's rights.

⚖️On October 6, we were honoured to welcome former Justice Muhammad Imman Ali of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh as a guest lecturer in our Children in the Justice System course within the Advanced Studies in International Children’s Rights programme.

In his lecture, he drew on his extensive expertise and landmark judgements on child justice to discuss the treatment of children in the justice system as accused, victims and witnesses. The lecture bridged the law and practice and provided students with a judicial perspective on the interpretation and application of international and domestic children’s rights law in domestic courts. The lecture also highlighted the crucial role played by judges in ensuring respect for children’s rights.

We sincerely thank Justice Muhammad Imman Ali for sharing his expertise and inspiring our students with his commitment to children's rights and justice!
