Maastricht University

Maastricht University Based in Europe, focused on the world.
We believe that education should be centred on you, the student.

Maastricht University (UM) is the most international university in the Netherlands and one of the best young universities in the world. Located in the heart of Europe, the university stands out for its international character, innovative education model and multidisciplinary approach to research and education. At UM, we work with the cooperative education model called Problem-Based Learning (PBL)

that provides a small-scale and personal approach where knowledge is born in discussions that go beyond simple memorisation and a shallow understanding of concepts. Research in UM is inspired by topical issues such as sustainability, European integration, healthy ageing and the influence of technological developments on society. And to us, you're not one of many students filling a seat in a crowded lecture hall. Instead, you're a contributing member of our academic community. To study in Maastricht is to study with an international perspective. When compared to other universities in the Netherlands and its surrounding countries, Maastricht University has the highest ratio of international students, representing all corners of the globe. Almost half of our students and one third of our academic staff come from abroad, together representing over 100 different nationalities. This international flavour is infused into every aspect of our education and student life.

Then and now: Health Sciences

What started in 1980 as a pioneering programme has grown into a broad field of study with many possible paths into healthcare, policy, prevention and psychology.

In this story, Henk Smid, part of the first cohort of Health Sciences students, and current student Renske Dalm reflect on how the programme has changed over the past 50 years. For Henk, Health Sciences meant learning how to make a difference across the entire healthcare system. For Renske, it offered the broad foundation she needed to discover where her interests really lie.

Their stories show how Health Sciences has evolved with the times, while keeping one thing at its core: looking at health from different angles to make an impact on people’s lives.

50 hours, three celebrations, one UM community

From 21 to 23 May, staff, students and alumni came together for the Garden Gathering, Student Day and Alumni Homecoming to celebrate the 50th anniversary year of Maastricht University.

The result was 50 hours of connection, recognition and celebration. Around 2,000 staff members and guests gathered on Thursday, 2,500 students turned Tapijn into a lively festival ground on Friday, and more than 1,300 alumni returned to Maastricht on Saturday to reconnect with former classmates, faculties and the city where their student years began.

From singer-sonwriter duo Liou at the Garden Gathering to the Battle of the Faculties, John Tana’s performance and reunions across generations, UM50 showed what fifty years of Maastricht University are really about: people, memories and a shared sense of belonging.

Enjoy the UM50 celebrations, and take care in the warm weather ☀️

With warm weather expected during today’s UM50 Student Day and tomorrow’s Alumni Homecoming, we kindly ask all visitors to take a little extra care while enjoying the celebrations at Tapijn.

Please drink enough water, make use of the shaded areas on site and take a break from the sun when needed. There is plenty to enjoy, from music and activities to food, drinks and (re)connecting with the UM community.

We look forward to celebrating these special UM50 days together.

The hidden places that make FASoS special 📸

A hidden coffee bar, the oldest gym hall in the Netherlands, a courtyard garden, a digital lab and even a ghost story. FASoS is more than a faculty; it is a collection of places where history, creativity and international academic life come together.

As part of UM50, this story takes you through the buildings and corners that give the Maastricht University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences its character. From the 18th-century Hof van Tilly to The PLANT, where staff and students experiment with digital tools for research and teaching, FASoS shows how the past and future can meet in one faculty.

Then and now: European Law School at Maastricht University ⚖️

The European Law School at Maastricht University started as an ambitious new programme built together by students and lecturers. Today, it continues to shape internationally minded legal professionals who look beyond borders and black-and-white thinking.

For alumnus Paul Meiser, the programme opened doors from Maastricht cafés and study association meetings all the way to Washington, DC — and later to a career in healthcare governance. For current student Paula Sultanof, it’s the comparative, future-focused approach to law that stands out, from AI regulation to sustainability and technology law.

What hasn’t changed over 50 years? The close community, international outlook and Problem-Based Learning that continue to define the programme.

Join UM50: from ideas to experiences across our community 👩‍🎓🤝

Maastricht University is celebrating its 50th birthday with the community. Through Join UM50, 15 community-building projects have received funding to bring people together in new, creative ways.

One example? The Pint of Science Maastricht UM50 edition — where science quite leaves the lecture hall and lands in the pub. Expect inspiring, accessible talks from UM researchers, covering everything from health to AI, all in a relaxed setting with a drink in hand. No prior knowledge needed — just curiosity.

It’s also an illustration of what Join UM50 is about: lowering barriers, sparking conversations, and connecting research with society in unexpected ways.

Feeling curious? Find more info about Pint of Science here: https://edu.nl/mk6qx

New Join UM50 events are continuously added to the calendar https://edu.nl/khku6 — so keep an eye on it and find something that fits you.

Photo exhibition 50 years of UM 📸

A travelling photo exhibition marks the 50th anniversary of Maastricht University, offering a rare look into the 1970s, 80s and 90s. Not just ceremonies, but everyday life—students, staff, and the moments in between that shaped the university community.

Curated from the university’s own photo archive by the University Library, the exhibition shows how UM evolved over time—and how closely it has been connected to the city around it. It’s a reminder that institutions are built as much in daily interactions as in major milestones.

Interested? The exhibition is free to visit during office hours at various UM locations.
