Maastricht University (UM) is the most international university in the Netherlands and one of the best young universities in the world. Located in the heart of Europe, the university stands out for its international character, innovative education model and multidisciplinary approach to research and education. At UM, we work with the cooperative education model called Problem-Based Learning (PBL) that provides a small-scale and personal approach where knowledge is born in discussions that go beyond simple memorisation and a shallow understanding of concepts. Research in UM is inspired by topical issues such as sustainability, European integration, healthy ageing and the influence of technological developments on society. And to us, you're not one of many students filling a seat in a crowded lecture hall. Instead, you're a contributing member of our academic community. To study in Maastricht is to study with an international perspective. When compared to other universities in the Netherlands and its surrounding countries, Maastricht University has the highest ratio of international students, representing all corners of the globe. Almost half of our students and one third of our academic staff come from abroad, together representing over 100 different nationalities. This international flavour is infused into every aspect of our education and student life.

AI voor iedereen: twee gratis bijeenkomsten in Parkstad

Wat kun je nu écht met AI en ChatGPT? En hoe zorg je dat iedereen kan profiteren van de mogelijkheden van deze technologie?

Ter gelegenheid van haar 50-jarig bestaan organiseert de Universiteit Maastricht samen met regionale partners twee gratis bijeenkomsten in Heerlen. Toegankelijk, praktisch en zonder dat je voorkennis nodig hebt.

📍 7 november | AI dichtbij: Leer wat AI voor jou kan betekenen
UM-onderzoeker Kurt Driessens laat zien hoe je AI kunt gebruiken voor dagelijkse vragen, werk, studie en hobby's. Je ontdekt verschillende AI-tools en gaat er zelf mee aan de slag bij MIJN-werk in Heerlen.

Waarom is het belangrijk dat vrouwen niet alleen AI gebruiken, maar ook meedenken over de ontwikkeling ervan? Liesbeth Wijlaars van herAI.tech verkent de mogelijkheden tijdens een interactieve middag bij Brightlands Data & AI Campus in Heerlen.

Beide bijeenkomsten zijn gratis en aanmelden is verplicht. Iedereen is welkom, ook zonder technische achtergrond.

A former monastery church turned lecture hall, an underground auditorium and the historic Tapijn Barracks. The buildings of Maastricht University School of Business and Economics (SBE) have quite a few stories to tell.

“The best years of my life.”

When Karl Dittrich returned to his hometown of Maastricht in 1981, he helped build something from scratch: Maastricht University Faculty of Law. No classrooms, no students, just ambitious ideas about how to make legal education different. He would later become UM president, but it's the people and the pioneering spirit he remembers most fondly.

“The combination of bright young people, enthusiasm and innovation was just wonderful. [...] Every day, I felt a sense of pride as I cycled to UM.”

As we celebrate UM's 50th anniversary, Karl looks back on those early years, the challenges of building a young university and some rather memorable encounters with student associations. Including one that cost him half his moustache.

12-17 October: Erasmus Days 🌍

During the , we celebrate the opportunities Erasmus+ creates for students and staff to learn, collaborate and exchange knowledge across borders.

At Maastricht University, international exchange is a cornerstone of who we are. As Phuong Anh Hoang Feng, an exchange student from CUHK, shares:

“Thanks to the Erasmus+ funding, I was able to immerse myself in a new learning environment. The problem-based learning method at UM significantly enhanced my self-learning abilities.”

One family, generations of impact at Maastricht University

From one of UM’s first medical students to a seat on the Executive Board: the Meindersma family has been part of Maastricht University’s story for almost 50 years.

Marjolijn Meindersma began studying Medicine in 1978, when cohorts were small, hierarchy was limited and a strong sense of community shaped the young university. Fourteen years later, her son Jan-Tjitte followed in her footsteps. Today, as vice-president of UM’s Executive Board, he sees that same focus on people and society reflected in the university’s role in Maastricht and the wider region.

Their stories show impact at very different levels: from the personal connection between a GP and her patients to the contribution of a university to the development of an entire region. But for Jan-Tjitte, making that impact is ultimately something you do together.

“As a board member, you are visible, but I don't consider that as important as achieving great developments together for both UM and the region.”

Busted: Eva en Laura run workshops on how to spot breast cancer

When Maastricht University medical students Eva De Groeve and Laura De Raeve realised they had never learned how to check their own breasts, they decided to change that.

They founded Busted, an initiative that teaches people how to recognise changes in their breasts, challenges common misconceptions and makes conversations about breast health more accessible. What started with a workshop for just two people has since grown into a six-student team, with workshops in the Netherlands and abroad.

In 2025, Busted received the UM Student Award. Now, Eva and Laura are looking for new students to help continue their work.

Weekend van de Wetenschap: een terugblik 🔬

Afgelopen zaterdag openden we tijdens het Weekend van de Wetenschap de deuren van Maastricht University en mochten we veel nieuwsgierige bezoekers verwelkomen. Van zelf experimenteren en vragen stellen aan onderzoekers tot het ontdekken van plekken waar je normaal niet zomaar komt: er was volop wetenschap te beleven!

Een grote dankjewel aan alle bezoekers, onderzoekers, studenten, collega’s en natuurlijk alle faculteiten voor hun enthousiasme en inzet. Dankzij jullie kijken we terug op een geslaagde en inspirerende dag!

“Historically speaking, propaganda was rarely a pure lie”

Disinformation isn’t new - but the ways it spreads are constantly changing. At Maastricht University, researchers from four faculties are working together to understand how misleading information emerges, spreads and shapes society, looking beyond social media to the wider information landscape.

Historian Betto van Waarden points to an important lesson from history: propaganda often relied not on completely false information, but on the selective use and framing of accurate facts. Understanding that bigger picture could help us become more resilient to disinformation - without simply learning to distrust everything we read.
