📍 In 2030, the National Slavery Museum will open on the Java Island in Amsterdam. The plan Tell the Whole Story has been approved by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and the municipality of Amsterdam. 🗣️ On Wednesday 13 November, the National Slavery Museum (NSM) hosts a public meeting at Maastricht City Hall, where initiative leaders Peggy Brandon, David Brandwagt and John Leerdam will present the plan Tell the Whole Story and discuss the museum's progress. 🌈 Today, on Purple Friday, schools and educational institutions all over the Netherlands use this dedicated day to foster solidarity with LGBTQ+ individuals. 💜✨

This is particularly important in response to the persistent challenges faced by LGBTQ+ students in (Dutch) educational institutions. These challenges encompass, but are not restricted to, an inhospitable class atmosphere, disregard of one’s pronouns and bullying.

By going purple on Purple Friday, we move towards creating an inclusive environment where every individual is not just accepted, but feels wholeheartedly encouraged to be their authentic selves.

Our office and UM Pride came together in purple colours to spread awareness about this special day. We encourage everyone to paint the day purple and foster a community that celebrates the beauty of diversity! 💜🌟

🏳️‍🌈WHY IS THERE A PRIDE FLAG AT SKILLSLAB?

On October 25th, a festive ceremony was held at the Skillslab of FHML (UM, UNS5) to raise the Pride Flag. In the presence of Skillslab staff and Branislav Števonka from the Diversity & Inclusivity Office team, Femke Jongen-Hermus, the director of Skillslab, and Albertine Zanting chair of the FHML Taskforce Internationalisation and Diversity, the flag was proudly hoisted to the top.

🗣Femke delivered an inspirational speech, reaffirming her dedication to fostering an inclusive and safe work and learning environment, where individuals can truly express themselves. She envisions the flag as a symbol of this mission, signalling that at the Skillslab, diversity is not merely accepted, but wholeheartedly embraced, which is why the flag will proudly fly there permanently.

🏥 Afterwards, we engaged in an enlightening conversation with Femke and Albertine about the significance of translating symbolism into action, particularly within the realm of medical education. She explained that effective care can only occur when there is an understanding of the personal care request of every single patient, including their expectations and capabilities. "This is, for example, one of the cornerstones of Shared Decision Making. We hope to achieve that by integrating patient variation as a fundamental component in the medical curriculum.

✨Initiatives like this show that promoting diversity and inclusivity is a joint endeavor, that should be addressed in various academic contexts and places at UM. We're really looking forward to what's in store for Skillslab, and we want to give a huge shout-out to Femke and Albertine for their efforts in diversity!

On September 29th, our very own UM Diversity Officer, Constance Sommerey, along with Diarian Meacham, Aya Ezawa and Jan Smits held an expert panel on the topic “‘Who’s afraid of the big, bad woke? Protecting academic freedom in Dutch universities” at the UNLimited festival.

🗣 The panel debated on whether 'wokeness' poses a genuine threat to academic freedom or if the term, when used pejoratively, has been weaponised to undermine advocates for social justice.

🎧 If you're curious to hear Constance and her colleague Darian's take on ‘“woke topics”, we suggest tuning in to the Woke as Science podcast (Link in the linktree).

This week, yet another devastating earthquake has hit Afghanistan. Our thoughts go out to our Afghan students , staff, and alumni who are impacted by this situation.

Being away from the people and places we hold dear is always a difficult situation, and it's even more challenging when faced with tragedies.

We recognize the emotional strain this situation may impose, and we want to provide support as you navigate these difficult circumstances. We encourage the affected members of our UM community to make use of the support resources available at UM.

To support earthquake relief efforts in Afghanistan, please explore our stories and highlights for donation options.

⚖️ Today, we celebrate the World Mental Health Day dedicated to raising awareness about mental health. The World Health Organization encourages us to unite behind the theme "OUR MINDS, OUR RIGHTS," emphasising that mental health is a universal human right.

🗣 Unfortunately, the reality often falls short of this ideal, with limited access to mental health care. That's why we would like to dedicate this day to the community voices and initiatives focused on promoting mental health and wellbeing.

✨Here are just a few:

, a compassionate initiative providing free and confidential psychological support and guidance for individuals aged 12-25.

, a student chaplaincy at UM , a hub for a diverse range of events, from meditation and yoga sessions to vibrant community gatherings.

, UM alumni, former study adviser, and psychotrauma therapist and coach. Follow her for a daily dose of wisdom on trauma and mental health.
wellbeingmovement , an initiative dedicated to enhancing physical and mental well-being at Maastricht University. Give them a follow and stay tuned for exciting events such as the UM Wellbeing Week 2023 happening from November 17th to 22nd.

👉 Do you know any other relevant initiatives within our community or beyond? Feel free to share them in the comments.
