UCM has good news! No, it has great news! You might have heard about some changes in leadership at UCM, so today we want to introduce you to our new programme director: the one and only Wolfgang Giernalczyk!

Wolfgang is the perfect representation of UCM, as he has devoted 17 years of his life to the programme. Wolfgang himself was a UCM student – from 2005 to 2008 focusing on international relations, politics, and sociology. After his time as a student, he took a short break from UCM for a year to obtain his master's degree. Then he returned to become a junior teaching fellow and has not left since. Over the years he was given more and more responsibilities. Wolfgang eventually became a lecturer and took over the course Argumentation that he still provides today! Throughout his time at UCM Wolfgang also began to take on more managerial roles.

Wolfgang truly loves the idea of the liberal arts and sciences offered at UCM. "The idea of personal growth development and being in charge of your own study can be quite stressful. However, it really helps with your personal development.” Moreover, he is also highly appreciative of the tight-knit community found at UCM. “The small-scale learning at UCM and the community feeling is the true essence of UCM; although UCM has been growing in size, even with a larger group of students, a community will still be created!”

Our wonderful programme director already has some plans for the future of UCM. He wants to continue “investing in bringing the magic back after COVID that seemed to have disappeared. I want UCM to be a place where serious work goes on but without it always feeling too serious. UCM should feel inclusive, creating connections between students, staff, and tutors.” In addition, UCM is also planning on opening two new buildings behind the current main building. These two buildings will be used as offices, study spaces, a creativity hub, and the new home of UNIVERSALIS.

We want to welcome Wolfgang into his new role and wish him success in his new endeavor. Congratulations, Wolfgang!

Wednesday and Friday are always great days in Maastricht. You might ask why. Well, that is because the Markt comes to town! Although Wednesday's Markt is quite smaller in comparison to Friday, both provide Maastrichtenaars access to fresh fruit, meat, bread, and loads of other treats. Have you been to the Markt yet? If not... make sure to visit soon!!

A wonderful opportunity that science concentration students have at UCM is entering a laboratory and investigating a scenario of different experiments. Some of our UCM students are working on immunofluorescence in their cell biology lab! Do you plan to take courses that involve lab work while at UCM?

The first day of period four and the first day for our freshies! We hope that you have all had a great first day at UCM! We do want to thank all the volunteers who helped make the new intake as comfortable as possible and gave them a great welcome! You all made their first Monday at UCM much easier!

Hey, Freshies!! It was great seeing all your wonderful faces during the introduction days!

Throughout the intro days, the February 2023 intake and exchange students were welcomed to life at UCM and provided with all the necessary information they needed to thrive in Maastricht and at UCM. On Tuesday, UCM organized a wonderful dinner event for all students.

I hope you are all looking forward to a new chapter in your lives!!

Many of our wonderful students have recently come back from their semester abroad. One of our students was Manu who did his semester abroad in South Korea! Let's hear what he has to say about it.

"Just got back from the trip of a lifetime! 🇰🇷 My exchange to South Korea was beyond amazing. Coming from Maastricht, Netherlands to Korea University was a huge adventure, but it was made even better by the friends I made and the amazing places I got to visit. From exploring the vibrant culture of Seoul to venturing out to Taiwan and Japan, every moment was filled with excitement and adventure. The natural beauty of Korea was breathtaking and the academic workload was just enough to allow for some much-needed downtime and exploration. I can't thank Korea University enough for this incredible opportunity and I will always cherish the memories made."

It's always nice to hear about current UCM students and what they are up to during the project period! Nina, Lilly, and Mariel are currently working hard to win their debate on narcotics in Europe for their course, Academic Debate.

They can see the importance of the course as it is a "bit more formal than everyday debate and helps us to really work on discussing about controversial topics." Working in a group has also helped in their "collaboration skills." They have also "created a strong bond with their group which has made the researching and executing process even more enjoyable!" How is your project period going?

It’s that time of the year again – the National Student Survey (NSE in Dutch) has started! In this survey, students are asked for their opinion on their programme. The final scores are listed in the ‘Keuzegids Hoger Onderwijs’ in which programmes are compared and therefore provide useful insight for prospective students and their parents.

So UCMers, check your emails for your NSE invitation, and make sure to complete the survey for a chance to win cool prizes!
