The Applications for the 28th Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot are Now Open!

The Willem Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot is one of the biggest and most prestigious moots in the world, with over 350 teams participating annually in the competition. Every year the Moot centers around a problem that is written by a team of highly experienced lawyers and professors, who assemble for this purpose an actual case file. The problem always involves highly complex, but also highly interesting issues of international arbitration and commercial law. The Moot is a perfect opportunity for talented and highly ambitious students who want to learn more about arbitration and/or commercial law and possibly pursue a career in those fields. Maastricht University has always done well in the competition and various students of previous teams have gone on to make a career in the world of international arbitration.

The Moot consists of a written phase (taking place from October 2020 till January 2021) and an oral phase (from February 2021 – April 2021). You will be intensively coached to write award-winning memoranda and to plead your case in front of a professional tribunal. As all participants in previous editions will attest, there is no better way to learn how to structure, write and present a legal argument than by participating in this Moot.

The final rounds of the Moot usually take place in Vienna. This year that part of the Moot will be held online. However, considering that virtual hearings become the new normal, this 2nd Virtual Moot presents itself as a great opportunity to practice pleadings in a virtual environment. Notwithstanding, we are hoping that various so-called pre-moots around Europe will be held physically and that the team will be able to travel to these moots, meet new people and have lots of fun.

Considering that every Moot problem tackles thought-provoking arbitration and commercial law issues, participants in the Moot will also have the opportunity, if they want, to write a bachelor or master thesis on a topic related to the Moot problem.

For more information on the Moot, visit: https://vismoot.pace.edu/.

In order to apply, please send an e-mail to [email protected] before the 11th of September, with the following documents attached:
1) Your Curriculum Vitae;
2) Your Academic Transcript.

In the first stage of the selection procedure, all applicants will receive the details of a commercial law problem, on the basis of which they will be asked to write a short memorandum (max. 3 pages). In the second stage of the procedure, there will be a short interview and pleading based on the memorandum. We would like to complete the selection of the team around the 21st of September.

APPLY FOR The 27th Willem C. Vis International Commercial
Arbitration Moot Court Competition 2019-2020

Applications for the 27th Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot Court Competition 2019-2020 can be made now until September 13, 2019!
We are looking primarily for master students and bachelor students that are currently in their third year of their studies. Only students that show signs of excellence and prove their capacity to research, write, and plead during the selection procedure will be given a chance to be part of the VIS Moot Court team.

In order to begin the application and selection procedure, please send an e-mail to [email protected] (and to [email protected] in CC) with the following documents attached:
1) Your Curriculum Vitae;
2) Your Academic Transcript.

In a first stage of the selection procedure, all applicants will receive the details of a commercial law problem, on the basis of which they will be asked to write a short memorandum (max. 3 pages).
Students who will qualify from the first stage will receive an e-mail with suggested dates for an interview and will be asked to prepare a 5-minute pleading defending their analysis from the memorandum.

The goal of the Vis Moot is to encourage the study of international commercial law and international commercial arbitration, and to give instruction to students in a medium where theoretical knowledge is used for the purpose of developing arguments applied to a concrete commercial law problem. This moot will also stimulate and advance students’ legal writing, legal research and public speaking skills.
As it is the case with all law schools participating in the competition, being selected to represent Maastricht University in The Willem C. Vis moot court is by itself an accomplishment and a sign of excellence.

The journey comes to a successful end in Vienna.

The team received honorable mentions for both the Claimant and the Respondent memorandums, a first in Maastricht’s history of competing in the Vis Moot! Out of the 378 universities that competed our efforts were recognized in both categories.

We would like to extend our gratitude to everyone involved in the organization of the competition and to everyone who has supported us during the past 7 months.

A special thank you to CMS for their support that has allowed us to develop our skills over the past few months. Also to all of our family and friends for their continued support during the process. Last but not least, a big thank you to all of our coaches Willem Loof, On Daniel, Simon Glasl, and Anna Beckers. Without them none of this would have been possible.
