Through a cross discipline approach and project based learning curriculum, our students become well acquainted with the artistic res

earch and development skills required to incubate, initiate and execute projects. They take a critical position towards societal and cultural issues while incorporating entrepreneurial real life experiences and skillsets. This program is designed to develop independent thinkers towards becoming makers and doers with the skills to prove their presence and proficiency in a changing global environment. Come andisit our exhibition: The taste of Artificial Intelligence at !🧠

If A.I. is so smart anyway, what would it enjoy? What kind of art stimulates A.I.? How do young artists create work that arises at the intersection of A.I. and our natural clumsiness? How does A.I. make fun of our awkward virtuosity and romantic desire for a ‘real’ experience?

This exhibition is especially created for PAS, and is a presentation of A.I. projects of students from the minor of the Research Centre Technology Driven Art. In 2019, Max Wind, on behalf of the chair of technologydrivenart.org, wrote the book The Artistic Taste of Artificial Intelligence, and it immediately became the theme of a series of classes.

Showcased are samples of five years of creative drive through the lens of A.I. Five years of 'Thinking with our Hands.' Because in the end, A.I. doesn’t have hands.

Summer is in full swing, but before we fully embrace our summer break, we’d like to take one more look back at the inspiring final weeks of the academic year!

From celebrating achievements to sharing research and showcasing new work, the end of the year was filled with memorable moments:

🤝 A visit from our Industry Board to The Beginning, sparking conversations about emerging practices, collaboration and the future of interdisciplinary arts. (1)
🎨 The Beginning – the graduation exhibition of Maastricht Academy of Arts, where our graduates shared their projects with the world. (2/3)
🎉 Community gathering – students bringing together the iArts community to celebrate another year of learning, creating and collaborating. (4/6)
✨ End-of-Year Symposium – where the What Art Knows research centre presented the outcomes of a year of artistic research and exchanged ideas for future exploration. (7/8)
🎓 Graduation Ceremony – a proud moment as we celebrated our graduates and wished them all the best for the exciting journeys ahead! (9/10)

A huge congratulations to our iArts alumna Taqwa Ali on winning the 2026 Van Bommel Van Dam Prize!

In her remarkable paintings, Taqwa combines Limburg soil with elements such as hibiscus, the national flower of her native Sudan, creating powerful reflections on identity, belonging and connection across cultures.

“Ali's work is about the place where you are rooted, but also about the way in which an artist can have the power to imbue seemingly meaningless material with so much history and make so many connections that everyone is surprised by it,” said jury members Hadassah Emmerich, Hans den Hartog Jager and Rieke Righolt.

We are incredibly proud to see her unique artistic voice receive this well-deserved recognition. Congratulations, Taqwa - what an achievement! 👏

Curious? The exhibition featuring work by all four nominees is open to the public free of charge until 4 October 2026.

What if innovation stopped making things better?

For his graduation project Denovation, iArts graduate Joep Albers created works that deliberately disrupt functionality. Through humour, absurdity and critical design, he explores our relationship with technology, innovation and everyday objects.

At iArts, we explore how art, ecology, and societal challenges can intersect and inspire new ways of thinking.

Therefore we're proud that one of our projects, developed in collaboration with Jacqueline Heerema and Ronald Boer, has been featured in ELIA’s Arts & Ecology Community Hub: Green Initiatives Repository. 🌿

The project is included under “Envisioning Sustainable Futures” and reflects how iArts creates space for experimental, interdisciplinary, and ecologically engaged art education.

A visit to the Universität für angewandte Kunst in Vienna! 🇦🇹

Recently, Oscar and Cassidy went to the Universität für Kunst Wien, to meet up with the teams behind the interdisciplinary arts education in Vienna. During their two day visit, they connected especially with the teams behind the Transformation Studies ArtXScience and Cross-Disciplinary Strategies programmes.

"It was great to meet the people behind these exciting studies and to learn more about their approaches! We recognized the unique position of inter-/cross-/trans-/multi-disciplinary learning in the Arts at a BA level in Europe and the power in aligning on some fundamental ideas. Moving forward we are eager to discuss our ideas and approaches more, as well as providing exchange opportunities for our students and staff." - Oscar
