On 21 April Michael Faure participated in an Early Career Partnership Conference, co-organized by Michael, Elbert de Jong (Utrecht University), Ivo Giesen (Utrecht University) and Peter Mascini (Erasmus School of Law Rotterdam) on “Complexity and the public role of civil courts in health and environmental matters”.

Yesterday, our colleague Prof. Sarah Schoenmaekers gave her inaugural lecture at the Open University in Heerlen. Many congratulations to Sarah on behalf of the Metro community! ‍🎓

De Europese Unie is één economische ruimte en streeft tegelijk naar 'een rijke verscheidenheid van cultuur en taal'. In haar oratie 'De positie van cultuur binnen de EU: correctie, affectie, essentie?' geeft prof. dr. Sarah Schoenmaekers antwoord op de vraag: hoe houdt de wetgeving van de EU effectief rekening met cultuur en taal en met de steeds sterker wordende nationale, regionale en lokale gevoeligheden? Zij nam haar luisteraars vandaag mee op juridische cultuurreis.

On 10 January 2022 Madame Akouve Okpè (Marie) Abalo from the University of Lomé in Togo defended her thesis with the title "La mise en oeuvre du régime international du climat en Afrique de l’Ouest: Cas du Togo, du Niger et du Burkina Faso" (The implementation of the international climate change regime in West-Africa: the case of Togo, Niger and Burkina Faso).

The thesis project was supervised by Prof. Michael Faure (METRO, Maastricht University) and Prof. Koffi Ahadzi-Nounou (University of Lomé )and took place in the framework of a joint supervision agreement between the University of Maastricht and the University of Lomé. In the thesis commission questions were asked inter alia by Prof. Sarah Schoenmaekers en Prof. Mariolina Eliantonio, as well as by Prof. Luc Lavrysen (President of the Belgian Constitutional Court), Prof. Anne Pieter van der Mei and Prof. Nicolas de Sadeleer.

On Wednesday 8 December at 10.00, METRO researcher Huizi Ai will defend her PhD thesis "Protecting Societal Interests in Corporate Takeovers: A Comparative Analysis of the Regulatory Framework in the U.K., Germany and China" in an online ceremony. There will be a videostream via phd-defence.maastrichtuniversity.nl and via YouTube.

Huizi Ai is a Ph.d candidate of METRO and ICGI at Maastricht University. Her research field is in corporate law, corporate governance and Law&Economics. Her Ph.d topic is "The protection of the relevant societal interests in takeovers in the UK, Germany and China".
