My new article has just been published online: https://www.nature.com/articles/s42003-018-0238-9 This will form one of the chapters in my PhD thesis, which I will be finishing up in the coming months.

Christopher McCrum et al. present a study of reactive gait adaptation in humans using unexpected treadmill accelerations during walking. They find that humans improve their gait stability over a short time period and, at re-exposure one month later, show further stability improvements due to retenti...

My most recent article: A systematic review of gait perturbation paradigms for improving reactive stepping responses and falls risk among healthy older adults http://eurapa.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s11556-017-0173-7

Falls are a leading cause of injury among older adults and most often occur during walking. While strength and balance training moderately improve falls risk, training reactive recovery responses following sudden perturbations during walking may be more task-specific for falls prevention. The aim of...

We aimed to determine whether there are different changes in Achilles tendon (AT) mechanical properties in middle-aged, compared to younger runners that might indicate that tendon fatigue, induced by

One of the projects I assisted with during my masters internship has been published this week. In comparison to my masters thesis paper, which analysed gait stability and adaptation in vestibulopathy patients, this paper focused on stance stability and how vision and proprioception contribute to this in these patients. http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/08990220.2016.1178635

My new commentary paper published in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience: http://journal.frontiersin.org/article/10.3389/fnagi.2016.00111/full

Falls in older people often occur during ambulation, frequently due to trips or slips (Berg et al., 1997), and are associated with many negative health outcomes (Terroso et al., 2014). Consequently, adaptation and improvement of compensatory stepping responses (which are less effective in old age; M…

It is now about one and a half years since my graduation from the MSc Human Movement Science in Maastricht. I am now starting the second year of my PhD, which I was fotunate enough to be awarded two grants for after my masters course. I have continued to research in a similar topic to my masters thesis, which was published shortly after I graduated (see link: http://physreports.physiology.org/content/2/12/e12222). Throughout my PhD project, I will occassionally post some more updates for those interested.

Unilateral peripheral vestibular disorder (UPVD) causes deficient locomotor responses to novel environments due to a lack of accurate vestibular sensory information, increasing fall risk. This study aimed to examine recovery response (stability recovery actions) and adaptive feedback potential in dy…

A few people have sent me messages asking about the course. For the most up to date information, please check out the current Master Challenger, Tom at his page https://www.facebook.com/MSchallengeTom/?fref=ts

Today is the last day for my year group of full time students and we will be presenting our thesis findings to staff and new students of the course. It has been a fantastic year and showing the new students the end product of our time is a great idea!

I am currently preparing my final piece of work for the masters: the presentation about my thesis which will take place on Friday next week. All of the new students will get to see the presentations from the previous year's students! Looking forward to it!
