A degree does not have to fit into one box.

At UCR, students combine disciplines to build something that actually reflects how the real world works.

Law and psychology.
Data science and economics.
Science and storytelling.

These are not random combinations. They lead to real careers.

The question is not what job you get.

It is what kind of problems you want to solve.

Celebrating Undergraduate Research at UCR โœจ๐Ÿ“š

What does it take to be published in Ad Astra, University College Roosevelt's undergraduate academic journal?

This year, Ad Astra received 31 submissions from talented student researchers across a wide range of disciplines. Following a rigorous two-stage blind review process, just 7 papers were selected for publication.

The latest edition features research on:
๐Ÿ”น Philosophy โ€“ Free will and quantum mechanics
๐Ÿ”น Anthropology & Sociology โ€“ Prayer and peacebuilding in the Democratic Republic of Congo
๐Ÿ”น Linguistics โ€“ Multilingualism and identity development in international schools
๐Ÿ”น Philosophy & Gender Studies โ€“ An existentialist defence of transgender identities
๐Ÿ”น Education & Development Studies โ€“ Youth unemployment and education in Uganda
๐Ÿ”น Law โ€“ Private necessity in Dutch and English law
๐Ÿ”น Psychology โ€“ Cultural values, emotional intelligence, and workplace behaviour

From questions of personal identity and free will to peacebuilding, education, law, and workplace psychology, this edition showcases the breadth, depth, and impact of undergraduate research at UCR.

Interested in reading Ad Astra yourself? Copies can be ordered through bookstores across the Netherlands for just โ‚ฌ5 (covering printing costs only). The journal is printed by De Drukkery.

ISBN: 9789492170439

Congratulations to the student authors whose work was selected for publication, and to the Ad Astra editorial team for their dedication to fostering academic excellence and critical inquiry. ๐ŸŽ‰

Creativity took over Anne Common Space during RAW's Journal Launch Week!

To celebrate the release of the newest edition of its journal, students of the Review of Arts and Writing (RAW) society transformed the space into a vibrant exhibition showcasing the artwork, photography, writing, and creative projects featured in this semester's issue of RAW.

The fair brought together students from the UCR community through a journal exhibition, multiple workshops, and collaborations with other societies as well as independent artists, creating a space where creativity, self-expression, and community could flourish. Skills like weaving and sketch-booking, and technologies like CNC plotting were explored during the fair! The end of the fair was celebrated with the live performance of a local emergent band.

From inspiring artworks to meaningful conversations, the event highlighted the incredible talent, passion and curiosity that make UCR's creative community so unique.

Of course, this two-day event would not have been possible without the support of the newly-established UCR Community Initiative Fund, which allowed RAW to properly celebrate the end of a prolific year with an ambitious fair that was unforeseen in its history.

A huge congratulations to everyone involved in organizing the RAW Journal Launch Week, and to all contributors featured in the twenty-eighth issue of the journal! ๐ŸŽ‰

As part of the Peace and Conflict course led by Dr. Sandra M. Rios Oyola, UCR students attended a guest lecture by Dr. John Njenga Karugia on war, colonialism, and reparations for the Chagossian people of the Chagos Archipelago, including Diego Garcia.

The session encouraged students to engage with difficult questions surrounding historical justice, memory, forced displacement, international law, and the lasting impact of colonialism on communities today.

Through discussion and reflection, students connected classroom concepts to real-world issues that continue to shape global politics and human rights debates.

Experiences like these are an important part of studying at UCR: learning from experts, engaging with diverse perspectives, and exploring complex global challenges from multiple angles.

Recently, the Burgerzaal was filled with inspiring stories, thoughtful debates, and confident public speaking as pupils from Magistraal Primary School took to the stage to showcase the communication skills they have developed over the past months.

As part of the 'Rhetoric in Action' course, UCR students worked closely with these young learners throughout the semester, helping them build confidence and strengthen their public speaking, storytelling, and debating abilities. This community-engaged learning initiative highlights the power of education beyond the classroom, creating meaningful connections between students and the wider community.

A big congratulations to the pupils for their impressive performances and to our UCR students for their dedication, mentorship, and hard work in making this experience such a success. We are also grateful to the parents, teachers, and school leadership who joined us to celebrate this achievement.
