𝐈𝐧 𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐒𝐚𝐦 – 𝐏𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐍𝐒𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧 (1957–2026)

On Saturday, 6 February, Professor Dr. Peter Nissen passed away at the age of 68 following a cerebral infarction. He will be remembered as a passionate scholar, a gifted communicator and a significant contributor to the work of NOSTER.

Peter Nissen, Professor at Radboud University, Nijmegen, served as Chair of the NOSTER Executive Board from 2009 to 2015, leading its meetings with warmth, wisdom, and professionalism, and working closely with the academic director. During this period, he also co-supervised the NOSTER PhD Seminar Historical Research in Theology and Religious Studies, mentoring, advising, and inspiring a new generation of scholars.

Another major contribution was his participation in the Royal Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) Exploratory Committee on Theology and Religious Studies. The committee’s findings were published in the 2015 report Klaar om te wenden…: de academische bestudering van religie in Nederland: een verkenning (Ready to Turn: An Exploration of the Academic Study of Religion in the Netherlands).

Nissen was a prolific author, publishing dozens of books and articles on a wide range of topics in church history, spirituality, and ecumenical studies for both academic and general audiences. He was also a frequent commentator on religion in national media, particularly on Catholicism and the Vatican.

We extend our sincerest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.

Call for Papers!

ISSR/SISR Benelux Workshop
β€œReligion, Spirituality, and the Sacred in Liquid Modernity”
17 June 2026 | Tilburg University

The Benelux Section of the International Society for the Sociology of Religion (ISSR/SISR), in partnership with the Center for Religion in the Public Sphere (CRiPS, Tilburg University), invites proposals for papers from scholars working in the sociology and anthropology of religion.

The workshop brings together scholars in the fields of sociology, anthropology, political science, media studies, and other social scientific disciplines who investigate how religion, spirituality, and the sacred take shape within the public sphere of so-called β€œsecular” societies. Contributions that critically reconsider secularisation narratives and explore how religious and secular domains intersect, overlap, and transform in contemporary contexts are particularly welcome.

One aim of the workshop is to foster stronger connections among social scientists of religion across disciplines working in the Benelux. The conference theme is therefore broad: Religion, Spirituality, and the Sacred in Liquid Modernity. Papers addressing empirical questions about religion, spirituality, and the sacred in contemporary societies are invited.

The submission deadline is 1 March 2026.

We’re proud to share that NOSTER has received an excellent evaluation from the independent committee assessing the research of Radboud University’s Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies.

The committee highlights NOSTER’s resilience, creativity, and continued commitment to PhD education, even in the face of increasing costs and limited resources. They describe NOSTER as a vital and forward-looking hub for doctoral education and community-building in theology and religious studies.

We’re grateful for the committee’s careful analysis, constructive suggestions, and recognition of NOSTER’s role within the Dutch academic landscape.
