Op 6 mei, 81 jaar na het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog, presenteerde cultureel historicus Frank Mehring zijn boek ‘Songs of Liberation in the Netherlands’ op een avond georganiseerd door de bibliotheekvan Rees, de vereniging Liemers Niederrhein en de historische vereniging van Rees (RESSA). 🇳🇱🎸🎶 Tijdens zijn onderzoek ontdekte hij in het Vrijheidsmuseum Groesbeek een archief van maar liefst 300 stukken bladmuziek, partituren en documenten die gerelateerd waren aan de Nederlandse bevrijding tussen 1944 en 1945. Tijdens de bezetting waren swingmuziek en andere muziekstijlen verboden, maar na de bevrijding konden Nederlanders ook naar andere soorten muziek luisteren.

🎵 Op het event draaide Mehring nieuwe opnames gebaseerd op de bladmuziek uit het archief en speelde hij zelf een paar van deze liederen die bij de bevrijding populair waren. De avond eindigde hij met “We Bring Peace to All,” waarbij het publiek hem enthousiast bijviel. 🇬🇧 On May 6, 81 years after the end of World War II, cultural historian Frank Mehring presented his book ‘Songs of Liberation in the Netherlands’ at an event organized by the Rees Library, the LiemersNiederrhein Association, and the Rees Historical Society (RESSA). 🇳🇱🎸🎶 During his research, he discovered an archive at the Freedom museum Groesbeek containing no fewer than 300 pieces of sheet music, scores, and documents related to the Dutch liberation between 1944 and 1945. During the occupation, swing music and other musical styles were banned, but after the liberation, the Dutch could also listen to other kinds of music.

🎵 At the event, Mehring played new recordings based on the sheet music from the archive and performed a few of these songs himself that were popular at the time of the liberation. He ended the evening with “We Bring Peace to All,” which the audience enthusiastically joined in on. How widespread is global fatigue with the United States of America? American studies professor Frank Mehring answers this question in a recent interview with the German broadcaster Deutsche Welle. Hoogtepunt afgelopen weekend: naar omvang en kwaliteit een zeer indrukwekkende en uiterst deskundig samengestelde tentoonstelling van het werk van de Afrikaans-Amerikaanse schilder Jacob Lawrence in Kunsthal Kade in Amersfoort. A must-see voor eenieder die geïnteresseerd is in het "andere" Amerika (het bestaat) en in prachtige kunst!

‘Na mijn studie Amerikanistiek wist ik één ding zeker: ik wilde niet het onderwijs, journalistiek of onderzoek in. Maar wat dan wel? Als oproepkracht op Kamp Heumensoord rolde ik de organisatie van de 4Daagse in. Ik groeide vanuit die functie door naar mijn huidige rol als coördinator van de servicedesk. De 4Daagse is een fantastische organisatie. Het mooiste? Het hele jaar werk je toe naar één evenement.

En dan, ineens, staan de lopers voor me op de Wedren om hun polsbandje op te halen. Dan zie je waar je het allemaal voor doet. Het blijft me verbazen hoeveel mensen, waaronder militairen uit alle hoeken van de wereld, samenkomen. Ondanks alles wat er in de wereld speelt, is er tijdens de 4Daagse een sfeer van verbondenheid. Iedereen helpt elkaar, iedereen hoort erbij. De wereld lijkt even iets minder hard.

Mijn studie leerde me analytisch denken, verbanden leggen en nauwkeurig werken, vaardigheden die ik dagelijks inzet. Maar ik had tijdens mijn studententijd meer mogen nadenken over wat ik daarna wilde. Mijn advies aan studenten: kies niet alleen een leuke studie die bij je past, maar denk ook vast na over je toekomst. De universiteit kan je daarin ondersteunen, maar ga er ook zelf mee aan de slag.

Nijmegen is voor mij de plek waar ik ben gegroeid, als student en als professional. Het is geen grote stad en ook geen dorp, maar wel een stad die een evenement als de 4Daagse mogelijk maakt. Daar ben ik enorm trots op.’

“After studying American Studies, I knew one thing for sure: I did not want to go into teaching, journalism or research. But what then? As a part-time employee at Camp Heumensoord, I rolled into the organisation of de 4Daagse. I worked my way up from that position to my current role as coordinator of the service desk. The 4Daagse is a fantastic organisation. The best part? You spend the whole year working towards one event.

And then, suddenly, the participants are in front of me on the Wedren to collect their wristbands. That’s when you see what you’ve been working towards. It never ceases to amaze me how many people, including military personnel from all corners of the world, come together. Despite everything going on in the world, there is an atmosphere of togetherness during the 4Daagse. Everyone helps each other, everyone belongs. The world seems a little less harsh for a moment.

My studies taught me to think analytically, make connections and work accurately, skills that I use every day. But during my studies, I should have also thought about what I wanted to do next. My advice to students: don't just choose an appealing study that suits you but also think about your future. The university can support you in this, but you should also do it yourself.

For me, Nijmegen is the place where I grew, both as a student and as a professional. It is neither a big city nor a village, but a city that makes an event like the 4Daagse possible. I am immensely proud of that.“
