The Honours Science Conference has passed and we are pleased to say it was a huge success! We can look back on a great day with many interesting speakers and engaging discussions.

We would like to thank all attending students and our speakers for joining us; it is because of you that the conference and the concluding drink/dinner were such an amazing experience.

Of course, the Honours Science Conference marks only the start of the Honours Community. Over the coming year many more fascinating events, seminars and lectures can be expected, alongside a variety of other social and cultural experiences.

With the Honours Science community we also note the end of the HonEURs Alumni Society's first lustrum. We had a wonderful experience and would like to thank all those involved for their efforts.

Regards,

The Lustrum Commission

And we're off! Honours Science Conference 2014 @ Erasmus Paviljoen

17/09/2014

The future of science lies in the young researchers of today. As such, the Honours Science Conference will introduce you to several young and talented researchers who are active at Erasmus University.

Our first young researcher is Marien Lievaart, who is currently pursuing a PhD in Experimental Psychopathology at the Department of Psychology. In particular, he will present his research on the (neuro)cognitive aspects of dysfunctional anger. Before starting his PhD, Marien studied Psychology at Erasmus University and also participated in the Erasmus Honours Programme in the year 2008-2009.

Our next two young researchers are part of the Young Erasmus (YE) network. YE is a network of young scientists at Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR). It aims to form and strengthen a network of excellent researchers at the Erasmus University Rotterdam, particularly strengthening interdisciplinary partnerships and contacts among excellent young researchers.

The first of these two researchers is Menno van Zelm. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Immunology at Erasmus MC, and his main research focus is on Adaptive Immunity. Dr. Van Zelm holds a PhD in Immunology from Erasmus MC and a MSc in Biology from Utrecht University.

Our final researcher presenting is Andrea Woltman. She is Associate Professor at the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology of the Erasmus MC and she is the Course Director Bachelor Medicine of the Erasmus MC. She studied Biomedical Sciences at the University of Leiden and also obtained her PhD training in Leiden at the Leiden University Medical Center. She started her own research group at the Erasmus MC in 2006, where her research is focused on immunology, especially on dendritic cells and chronic viral hepatitis. Since 2013, she is the chair of Young Erasmus.

How does science contribute to society? Or, more fundamentally, does science contribute to society at all? Academics often speak of the relevance of their research findings to business, policy and society and general but is this claim correct? The Erasmus Centre for Valorisation will discuss these important questions at the Honours Science Conference within the context of “Science and Society”.

Knowledge valorisation focuses on how academic and scientific findings are transferred outside of the peer-reviewed world of academia. Valorisation has two perspectives. On the one hand, academics are asked to deliver societal value by transferring their knowledge not only to their academic peers, but also to policy makers and professionals, economic parties and the general public. On the other hand, these societal, professional and economic parties can benefit greatly from the academic knowledge that is developed in universities and use it in their product innovation, policy, work place or day-to-day life.

In both cases, societal and economic value is created when academics work together with entrepreneurs, product developers, policy makers, citizens and professionals to become inspired by their unmet needs and demand and to develop their knowledge into knowledge products or services.

The Erasmus Centre for Valorisation will show you what knowledge valorisation entails and why it is important; even when one is primarily involved in fundamental science. Furthermore they will present several of their own research findings in the field of knowledge valorisation.

Can religion and science coexist? Or are they inherently contradictory? To discuss this topic the Honours Science Conference is pleased to announce our following two speakers.

Prof. Dr. Jaap van Heerden is a philosopher of science, columnist and Professor of Psychology at the University of Maastricht. Next to his research, Prof. Dr. Van Heerden has written for such publications as the Propria Cures and Het Hollands Maandblad. For his essays he received the Dr. Wijnaendts Francken award in 1991. This award recognizes excellence in essay-writing and literary critique.

Prof. Dr. Van Heerden has been a prominent opponent to the notion that religion and modern science can be unified and harmonized. Throughout the decades he has written several essays on the topic and he has been active in the public debate surrounding this issue. In 2005 he appeared in the series “God is Dead”, in which prominent scientists were given the opportunity to explain their vision on the thesis that God cannot exist.

During the Honours Science Conference Prof. Dr. Van Heerden will talk on the topic of science and religion, and will particularly argue that they are fundamental in opposition to each other.

Can religion and science coexist? Or are they inherently contradictory? To discuss this topic the Honours Science Conference is pleased to announce our following two speakers.

Prof. Dr. Cees Dekker is Distinguished University Professor of Molecular Biophysics at Delft University of Technology and the Director of the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience in Delft. His research spans a variety of subfields within nanoscience including biophysics, with a particular focus on the evolution of bacteria, the physics of chromatin maintenance, and solid state nanopores.

Next to his research, Prof. Dr. Dekker has an outspoken opinion on the relationship between science and religion. As a Christian he has been active in the discussion surrounding this topic. Dekker advocates that science and religion are not in opposition but can be harmonized. He wrote the foreword to the Dutch translation of “The Language of God” by Francis Collins, the current director of the National Institutes of Health. Like Collins, Dekker is a proponent of theistic evolution. He is actively debating creationists in the Netherlands.

At the Honours Science Conference Prof. Dr. Dekker will talk on this interesting topics and provide us with some insights into how he believes religion and 21st century science can be harmonized.

The Honours Science Conference is just around the corner and we are excited to announce our line-up of speakers to you over the coming days!

We are pleased to confirm that Diederik Stapel will discuss the topic of "Science and Ethics".

Diederik Stapel is a former professor of social psychology at Tilburg University and before that at the University of Groningen. In 2011 Tilburg University suspended Stapel, pending further investigation, for fabricating and manipulating data for his research publications. This scientific misconduct took place over a number of years and affected at least 55 publications. The discovery shocked the academic world and raised some serious questions about the state of research especially within the social sciences.

Although Diederik Stapel took full responsibility for his actions he has indicated that the current academic structure was conducive to his academic misconduct. In response to this, a discussion on the current structure of the scientific system and the incentives it induced was sparked. To this day, the topic is much discussed by policy makers and academics.

At the Honours Science Conference Mr. Stapel will focus particularly on the moral and ethical aspects of being an academic in the 21st century.
