Wijsgerige Faculteitsvereniging ERA ERA is de faculteitsvereniging van de Faculteit der Wijsbegeerte aan de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam.

Als faculteitsvereniging organiseren we evenementen om studenten dichter bij elkaar te brengen, zoals onze maandelijkse borrel en onze kroegcolleges. Maar ook zorgen wij voor culturele activiteiten zoals een filmavond, een architectuurfietstocht, studiereizen of een poëziebarbecue.

ERA informs: The Erasmus Student Journal of Philosophy (ESJP) is looking for new editors!

If you’re interested in philosophical writing, editing and getting involved with academic publishing, this might be something for you! As an editor, you’ll get to review and refine philosophical papers written by fellow students, receive training in editing and writing and gain more insight into the publishing process.

Applications are open to all ESPhil students until Thursday, October 15! To apply: send your CV and a short motivation letter to [email protected].

Dearest ERA members,

Allow me to introduce myself, I’m Raine and I will be your Commissioner of Marketing Affairs this upcoming year. You might have met - or at least heard - me last year as the always working, yet always present, unofficial 32nd board member of ERA. I was the Chair of External, a member of CULT, and attended loads of ERA events, perhaps even more than philosophy lectures. You might also not have met me, seeing as I am currently on exchange in Hong Kong, but I have talked to you if you’ve had contact with ERA through insta or whatsapp!

I am a double degree student with my main bachelor being Econometrics (well actually the Dutch version Econometrie & Operationele Research). Philosophy seemed to me a polar opposite, something to contrast the black and white thinking in maths, but has as a matter of fact proved to intersect in an insightful multitude of ways with econometrics. And ERA and the lovely community around it have played an indispensable part.

Besides studying, I spend my time cooking - or one could just say experimenting in the kitchen - playing piano, swimming or running, cuddling with my cat, and researching the next cultural event in Rotterdam I could attend (and most probably miss). That said, next year, I aim to put the creativity and critical thinking that philosophy has ignited within me to good use; I will be working on digital organisation, communication and marketing, and additionally transition into in-person tasks when returning from Hong Kong.

I have loved the start of this illustrious 33rd board year of ERA, and can’t wait for what is yet to come!

Hi! My name is Zofia Maria Pańkowska (if you knew me under a different name then no, you did not). I’ll be ERA’s Internal and External Relations Commissioner. This year we decided to combine both roles, while delegating some of the external responsibilities to other members. Overall, I will be
responsible for creating, overseeing, and connecting committees. I will also be a person responsible for
communicating with organizations outside of ERA, as well as organizing some of our reoccurring events, such as Pub Lectures or Film & Philosophy. But most importantly for ERA members, I will be the one to contact in case you have any issues with the association, as I am also one of the confidentiality officers. So, feel free to talk to me about any topic or problem you might have, big or small, I am happy to help with anything. You can talk to me in person anytime you see me or reach me through e-mail – [email protected].

Words cannot express how happy and excited I am to be a part of this year’s board, as in the past year ERA was the community I strongly needed. It helped me grow as a person and as a student, and it helped me meet some of my closest friends, so I cannot wait to give back to this amazing association.

Outside of BPSD I study Arts and Culture Studies, so very fittingly I am interested in these topics. I photograph, collect records, make great use of my Cineville card, read, and write, and I place great value upon collecting physical media in the modern world where everything seems to become more and more digital and fleeting. I also spend my days and nights following a wide range of sports, from basketball, through baseball, to professional wrestling. So if you are interested in any of these topics or wanna hear me yap about them and learn, feel more than welcome to chat with me!

Hey! My name is Serge van Graefschepe, and I will be overseeing ERA’s budget for the next academic year in my role as Treasurer and Vice-Chair.

I’m a double degree student combining Data Science & Marketing analytics and Philosophy. I was originally part of the External committee last year, which introduced me to the ERA community.

You may know me by now as “the guy with the tokens”, but my role extends far further than that. For example, I spend a lot of time begging people to keep track of their receipts.

Ever since I was young, I have dreamt of keeping track of cash inflows and outflows in Excel spreadsheets. When not occupied with the finances though, I like to keep myself busy with baking, things fashion related, reading and collecting magazines, and staying active.

I’m looking forward to next year and hope to see you all at the events!

I’m a double-degree student combining Philosophy with Psychology, and you might know me from CULT, where I was also reporting for duty as secretary last year. Being part of ERA has introduced me to some truly lovely people and a community I’m grateful to be part of, so joining the board felt like a meaningful way to give something back.

Outside of university, I’m interested in history and languages, read and listen to an excessive amount of music, and like collecting old books and postcards whenever I can. I’m a firm believer in conserving these little physical pieces of history (my enthusiasm for conservatism more or less ends there).

As your secretary, I’ll be doing my best to keep ERA’s administration and correspondence from disappearing into the void. I’ll also manage the newsletter - where I’ll do my best to keep you both informed and entertained!

Hello everyone!

My name is Asya Kahraman, and I will be reporting for duty as secretary this year. I’m a double-degree student combining Psychology with Philosophy, and you might know me from CULT, where I was again reporting for duty as secretary last year. Through being a part of CULT, and ERA itself overall, I’ve been lucky enough to meet some lovely and inspiring people that really helped me grow further into myself. ERA has been nothing but a
welcoming space, where I’ve met great friends, so I thought it would be especially meaningful to join the board and give back to the community, and to help make it feel that way for others as well. Outside of academic affairs, I have a great interest in history and languages, and like to spend my time reading and listening to an excessive amount of music. I also collect old books and postcards whenever. I’m able, and can say I’m a firm believer in the conservation of these physical pieces of history. I can also5
say my enthusiasm for conservatism more or less ends there. Otherwise, I enjoy watching football and drinking enough tea that I figure it deserves a mention. I realize I’m not really beating stereotypes here.

As your secretary, I will try to do my best at keeping ERA’s administration and correspondence in order, and our affairs from disappearing into the void. I’ll also manage the newsletter, where I will do my very best to keep you entertained and informed about what’s happening at ERA. Dear members,

My name is Veda Filosofia Singh Heemskerk. I will be your chairwoman for the upcoming year, however, you can call me Captain if the inculcation should strike. I’m a double-degree student with Economics, but as you can see from my middle name, it wasn’t really an option whether I study Philosophy or not… My father had high hopes in giving me this name and no sense of the impracticality of filling out a form. I’m probably vaguely known for showing up to CULT events, as I was the
treasurer of that committee last year. If not: I’m half Indian and half Dutch, I grew up in the only Indian city designed by a Frenchman, in a house built by a man who fought for the British against the Japanese. I used to say I would sail the Baltics post my bachelor’s but now wonder if I’ll ever get my sailing licence. I love Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, and Nabokov. I’m terribly loud when drunk, I believe emphatically that one must always read the preface of a book, and that John Singer Sargent never
captured a woman badly in paint, additionally Gilmore Girls is good fun to watch.

But most importantly, I have a strong sense of responsibility in completing what I have promised to do (in for a penny in for a pound as they say), so I look forward to doing my best as your chairwoman in the upcoming year
