πŸ“• DevISSues takes a closer look at the state of global democracy.

What is the current β€˜reverse wave’ of autocratization? What is fuelling it and how can it be resisted?

Our three themed articles approach these questions from various angles, focusing on solutions rather than challenges.

The issue also looks at the power of citizen science as illustrated by a new research project focusing on fossil fuel industry impacts. And we include an interesting conversation between ISS staff and students who share their experiences of the escalations of violence in Israel, Palestine and the broader region.

What could migration between Africa and Europe look like in 2045?

A new scenario-building report from the PACES project explores how climate vulnerability, AI, governance, labour markets and access to services could shape future migration decisions.

Rather than predicting a single outcome, the report brings together the strategic thinking of researchers, policymakers, business representatives, civil society actors and migrants to explore multiple possible futures, offering insights for migration research, policy and practice.

β˜€οΈ What does climate optimism look like in a time of urgency?

Yesterday, ISS welcomed Dr Ani Dasgupta, President and CEO of World Resources Institute (WRI), for a conversation on climate optimism, justice and the future of sustainable development.

The discussion around Dr Dasgupta's new book, The New Global Possible: Rebuilding Optimism in the Age of Climate Crisis, brought together students, researchers and practitioners to reflect on how societies can build economies that work for people, nature and climate, even amid geopolitical uncertainty and growing inequality.

The event featured insights from Dr Oane Visser, associate professor of agrarian studies at ISS, and an introduction by Prof. Dirk-Jan Koch.

A key takeaway from the discussion was the need to move climate conversations beyond distant targets and toward people’s everyday realities, from cleaner air and water to jobs, affordability and justice.

As Dr Dasgupta noted: '90% of the people suffering from climate impacts have had very little to do with it, and have very few means to protect themselves.'

Thank you to World Resources Institute for the collaboration and thoughtful exchange! We look forward to continuing the conversation.

🌾 Who controls land, water and oceans and who gets pushed aside in the process?

In this longread for the Transnational Institute, Professor Jun Borras examines how corporations, investors and states continue to reshape control over natural resources through increasingly normalized forms of dispossession.

Drawing on research from the Commodity & Land Rushes and Regimes project, the article explores the global dynamics of land, water and ocean grabbing and the struggles resisting them.

βš– What does it take to turn legal rights into real change?

In a new interview with the Journal of Law and Society, Associate Professor Dr Jeff Handmaker reflects on his recently published book, Legal Mobilization: Assessing the Potential and Limits of Law-Based Civic Advocacy.

The conversation explores his book and what still needs to happen for human rights and legal protections to be meaningfully realised and and where law-based civic advocacy can both succeed and fall short.

πŸŽ“ Join us in celebrating Dr Helena Varkkey, the new Prince Claus Chairholder for 2026–2027.

In her inaugural lecture yesterday, Dr Varkkey reflected on the recurring haze crisis in Southeast Asia. During the dry season, peatland fires intensify as water disappears from the landscape. The resulting smoke – known as β€˜haze’ – spreads across borders, replacing blue skies with toxic air pollution.

As Varkkey argues, without rain, the haze continues to travel and impact the health outcomes of communities.

The Prince Claus Chair in Equity and Development, established by Universiteit Utrecht and ISS, honours scholars working on equity, development and social justice.

🌏 As violence continues across Gaza and the West Bank, the political future of Palestine is increasingly shaped not only by events on the ground but also by shifting global alliances and international responses.

From the war in Ukraine to rising tensions between the US and Iran, these geopolitical realities continue to influence the Middle East in profound ways.

What role will the Netherlands – and Europe more broadly – play in what comes next?

On 29 May, research fellow Dr Libby Lahar joins experts Jan Pronk, Robert Serry and Rajaa Natour at the International Institute of Social Studies for a community dialogue on Europe’s role in shaping the political future and economic viability of Palestine.

The conversation draws on Lahar’s new book, The Economic Diplomacy of Peace in the Middle East: Paris Protocol to the Oslo Accords, exploring how economic diplomacy has shaped peace efforts from the Oslo process to today.
