What can music do when words fall short?

Last weekend, Britten’s War Requiem brought this question to the stage. But the conversation started weeks earlier. During Music for Peace & Justice, our students, teachers and staff explored the power of music and dance in times of conflict.

We’re ready.

‘You can’t perform this work without thinking about the world around you.’

This autumn, more than 225 musicians, singers and students will come together at the Grote Kerk Den Haag to perform Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem.

For the Royal Conservatoire The Hague, it is much more than a major concert marking our 200th anniversary. Britten brings the human reality of war strikingly close, combining the traditional Latin Requiem Mass with the words of First World War poet Wilfred Owen.

‘Britten makes you feel what lies behind the big words we use when talking about war: individual human lives,’ says project leader Jasper Grijpink. We spoke to Jasper about the upcoming performance and what it means to take on a work like the War Requiem today.
