Last week, The Hague came together to celebrate Liberation day at the Bevrijdingsfestival on the Malieveld!

Every year on 5 May, the Netherlands celebrates freedom and brings people together. The festival featured live music, inspiring talks, and a vibrant student area where student associations, HI The Hague, and other student organisations came together. The student zone celebrated freedom with its very own stage!☀️

Leiden University was also represented, even Rector Magnificus Sarah de Rijcke paid a visit to the festival.

A meaningful reminder that freedom should never be taken for granted.

How did you celebrate Liberation Day?

🎓 Turn your plans into reality with LUF Grants 💸

Did you know that FGGA students can apply for LUF grants to support their academic and international ambitions? 🌍

Whether it’s presenting research at an international conference or gaining first-hand experience abroad, LUF grants can help make opportunities like these possible. As Lavinia and Will show, the experiences are diverse and the impact goes far beyond academics alone.

💬 From attending international conferences to studying abroad in Morocco, their stories show how LUF can open doors that might otherwise remain closed due to financial barriers. Both students describe the application process as accessible and worthwhile, leading to valuable academic, professional and personal experiences.

International experience is increasingly seen as an important asset. As Thijs van Dooremalen, assistant professor at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs and member of the grant committee, emphasizes: this is exactly why students should be encouraged to explore opportunities abroad and continue developing themselves internationally.

If you’re thinking about studying, researching or going abroad; this could be your chance!

Do it Dutch Week at FGGA

This week, we’re celebrating the Dutch language and culture in a fun and low-threshold way, from useful phrases and typical expressions to Dutch food and everyday habits! 🇳🇱

Yesterday, we kicked things off in the Dutch Brasserie ☕️
Students were invited to order their coffee or tea for free if they would order it in Dutch! A small step, but a great way to practice in a relaxed and informal setting. It was great to see so many of you giving it a try! 💪

Throughout the week, we’ll continue sharing tips, expressions and fun facts to help you get more familiar with Dutch 💬

And don’t forget to keep that orange spirit alive🤩 With King’s Day coming up, it’s the perfect moment to experience Dutch culture 👑 From street markets to festivals, and of course: everything turns orange 🧡

We hope you will keep practicing, you’re already on the right track! 🚲

Study associations got a new spot on campus! 🎉

They have moved into their brand new hallway on the third floor of Wijnhaven. Here, they each have their own spot, along with study areas and chill spaces to relax and connect. Ruben from B.I.L. shows us around and gives a first impression!🔎

Study associations are run by and for students. For a small annual fee, you can become a member and join a wide range of activities, from study-related events to trips and social gatherings. It is all very accessible with no attendance obligations and there is always free coffee and tea☕️.

Right now, everyone is busy setting up and making their spaces their own and it is already looking great. In this reel, the BIL takes you along the hallway and gives you a peek inside their room.

Curious? Come by soon and take a look 👀

A week full of proud moments, happy faces and well-deserved recognition for all the hard work that has been put in over the past years.

A particularly memorable highlight was during the MPA ceremony, where we celebrated the 10,000th FGGA graduate 🎉 A milestone that reflects the growth of our faculty and the many students who have passed through it.

To all graduates: congratulations on this incredible achievement. We are proud of you and can’t wait to see what you’ll do next 💙

🌍 War in the Middle East

The recent US-Israeli strikes on Iran have been welcomed by critics of the Iranian regime, but they have also raised serious concern among analysts and policymakers. According to Leiden experts, these developments could trigger a dangerous domino effect across the region and beyond, further escalating tensions in an already fragile geopolitical landscape. This raises important questions about regional stability, international law and global alliances.

📚In this article, Leiden University experts unpack the situation and reflect on the broader implications, from the regional consequences to the potential impact on the international system.

Curious to understand the bigger picture?

💙 We also realise that conflicts like these can affect members of our community personally. If you feel impacted by the situation, support for students is available through the university.

💖 International Women’s Day at FGGA 💙

Every year on 8 March, International Women’s Day recognises the achievements of women and invites reflection on gender equality and the challenges that still remain. It is a moment to celebrate progress, amplify voices and continue conversations about inclusion in academia and beyond. 💪

This week, we’re sharing student stories, articles and events that invite reflection and discussion. Research shows that women’s expertise is more often questioned in academic and public debates, illustrating that academic freedom is not experienced equally by everyone. 🌍

We also spoke to four women from our faculty about pride, leadership and social change; their personal journeys show just how diverse womanhood can be. 🙌

And on 6 March, historian Nadia Bouras will deliver the annual Annie Romein-Verschoor Lecture, reflecting on academic freedom through her experiences as a first-generation academic and woman of colour, and discussing how gender, background and visibility shape whose voices are heard in academia. Everyone interested is warmly invited to attend the lecture and join the conversation! 🙋‍♀️

📲 Check out our stories and the highlight ‘WOMAN’S DAY’ to explore the articles and learn more about the events.

🎉 FGGA student wins Leiden University Thesis Award!🎊

Kaat Lageman (MSc Public Administration: Economics & Governance) has won the first prize in the Leiden University Thesis Awards. 🏆 The awards were presented during a festive ceremony at the Lorentz Hall, where outstanding research and theses from across the university were celebrated.✨

Her thesis explores wellbeing profiles of participants in The Hague’s “Instapeconomie” programme, which enables people on long-term social assistance to take part in entry-level work while keeping their benefits. The jury praised the thesis as clearly written, academically strong and highly relevant for society, calling it a well-deserved top distinction. 💪

Congratulations, Kaat! 💙

Four years of war in Ukraine.

Since February 2022, the war has reshaped Europe’s security landscape and transformed how modern wars are fought. What began as a full-scale invasion has evolved into a conflict defined by drone warfare, digital command systems, cyber operations and new forms of civil-military cooperation. It has forced governments, militaries and societies across Europe to rethink defence, resilience and technological innovation and it continues to have real consequences for international security and everyday life. 🌍

For many in our community, this is not just something we read about. In 2023, President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke live with our students in The Hague during a special livestream, answering their questions and urging them to look beyond their own bubble and engage with what is happening in the world. It was a powerful reminder that global conflicts are closely connected to what we study and discuss on campus. 📚

To mark four years of war and reflect on what comes next, we are hosting a symposium with experts from academia and policy. Together we will explore lessons from Ukraine for European security, military adaptation, technological change on the battlefield and support for Ukraine. 🇺🇦
