🌱Excited to share one more time the newest cycle of Earth Craft ~ 𝓚𝓲𝓷𝓭𝓻𝓮𝓭 𝓢𝓸𝓲𝓵𝓼 🌱 Still available for ordering!

We are proud to present the latest edition of our Earth Craft zine, co-edited by the wonderful Food Study Group. This cycle celebrates the power of food culture and land practices to unearth community (her)stories of struggle and resistance within a web of life that connects all continents for the love of soil.

Featuring diverse voices from around the world, including .hijawi, .sansour, Meivy Andriani , .haiven and more, this zine explores themes of seed, land and food sovereignty through the lens of foods such as Za’atar, (heirloom) seeds, palm oil, wildly foraged plants, and pollution remediating mushrooms.

𝐇𝐚𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧 is editor of VAGABONDS a series of short, radical books from Pluto Press. He teaches at Lakehead University, where he co-directs the ReImagining Value Action Lab (RiVAL).

𝗘𝗹𝗶𝗮 𝗡𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮(she/her)explores a wide range of art mediums with an interdisciplinary approach and focuses on the discourse on food.

Through food, she intends to scrutinize power, social, and economic inequality in this world. Using several mediums from workshop, study group, publication, site specific, performance, video and art installations, she explores the social implications of the food system to critically address the wider issues such as ecology, gender, class and geopolitics.

In 2015 she initiated 𝘽𝙖𝙠𝙪𝙙𝙖𝙥𝙖𝙣, a food study group, with colleagues from different disciplines. 𝘽𝙖𝙠𝙪𝙙𝙖𝙥𝙖𝙣 runs on the principle of complementarity and camaraderie between its members. With 𝘽𝙖𝙠𝙪𝙙𝙖𝙥𝙖𝙣 she has conducted cross references research on food within the socio-political-cultural context.

She is also part of 𝙎𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙜𝙜𝙡𝙚𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙎𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙞𝙜𝙣𝙩𝙮, the solidarity platform on Land, Water, Farming, Food which aim to build lasting solidarity between groups in Indonesia and trans-national who are engaged with struggles for the right to self-determination over the basic resources that our individual and collective bodies need.

The lecture and conversation will happen in Auditorium of .t from 18:30 onwards

In the tropical Andes of Colombia the water travels upwards bringing the low and hotland majestic river’s memories, through evaporation to the highlands. There, cloud-forests and paramos absorbs it as botanical sponges releasing it again to the lowlands in the form of streams, waterfalls and heavy rains.

After a delightful food intervention from previous edition of Studium Generale, 𝐑𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐬 are 𝐁𝐀𝐂𝐊 ! Make sure to be there and savor creative fusion of food, imagination and ancestral wisdoms that and prepared for us!

The food will be on offer from 17:30 in Auditorium of .thehague

Inspired by Marwa Arsanios' film mentioning the Indigenous farming methods that rely on the Moon, and by the concept of biodynamics farming and its relationship to celestial bodies, and on the footsteps of Mayis' grandmother Emine, who had her own methods of connecting to her hazelnut orchard & learning through them how much hazelnuts they would be gifted that year by those unpredictable friends;
we will center this intervention on the Moon and the cosmic energies that reflect and connect to our soils.

On the day of our intervention, the Moon will be in its Last Quarter phase.
There will be a table set up with 12 bamboo steamers, as an ode to 12 sections of the sky with its signs.

In the steamers there will be mantı, a moist, delicious Turkish meal, eaten with a garlic tomato sauce and some yoghurt; a common food for the Ramadan time. Ramadan is a Moon holiday, called "the sultan of the 11 moons".The towering steamers recalling the plant stems going high, fast, encouraged by the pull of the Moon.

Beautiful People!

Meet closer our guests and speakers who will share their wisdom on 𝙏𝙝𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙙𝙖𝙮!

𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙬𝙖 𝘼𝙧𝙨𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙤𝙨’ (she/her)practice tackles structural and infrastructural questions using different devices, forms and strategies, from architectural spaces, their transformation and adaptability throughout conflict, to artist run spaces and temporary conventions between feminist communes and cooperatives, the practice tends to make space within and parallel to existing art structures allowing experimentation with different kind of politics. Film becomes another form and a space for connecting struggles in the way images refer to each other.

In the past four years Arsanios has been attempting to think about these questions from a new materialist and a historical materialist perspective through different feminist movements that are struggling for their land. She tries to look at questions of property, law, economy and ecology from specific plots of land. The main protagonists become these lands and the people who work them.

𝙋𝙖𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙖 𝙙𝙚 𝙑𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨 is professor of Art & Spatial Praxis at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. Her research focuses on artistic practices that tell different stories about and intervene in our urban environment. Previously, she worked as an assistant professor of philosophy at Maastricht University and as a researcher at the Institute of Network Cultures in Amsterdam.

On Thursday, from 17:00-19:00 in Auditorium, feel invited to Jumana Manna’s ( ) honest, beautiful and humane short films

𝙁𝙤𝙧𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙧𝙨 and𝙒𝙞𝙡𝙙 𝙍𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙨

Foragers (2022) depicts the dramas around the practice of foraging for wild edible plants in Palestine/Israel with wry humor and a meditative pace. Shot in the Golan Heights, the Galilee and Jerusalem, it employs fiction, documentary and archival footage to portray the impact of Israeli nature protection laws on these customs.

The restrictions prohibit the collection of the artichoke-like ’akkoub and za’atar (thyme). Following the plants from the wild to the kitchen, from the chases between the foragers and the nature patrol, to courtroom defenses, Foragers captures the joy and knowledge embodied in these traditions alongside their resilience to the prohibitive law.

Wild relatives (2018) starts from an event that has sparked media interest worldwide: in 2012 an international agricultural research center was forced to relocate from Aleppo to Lebanon due to the Syrian Revolution turned war, and began a laborious process of planting their seed collection from the Svalbard back-ups. Following the path of this transaction of seeds between the Arctic and Lebanon, a series of encounters unfold a matrix of human and non-human lives between these two distant spots of the earth.

Samah Hijawi (she/her) is a multi-media artist (a painter, a performer, an astrologer, a story teller, a researcher and an academic, a cook—it’s up to you to decide). Regardless of the form through which she materializes her work, her projects are always deeply rooted in historical narratives which are used to re-imagine our contemporary life outside of the radicalized and polarized discourses that direct our lives today. In her recent project Kitchen. Table., she researches the movement of food practices over time and across geographies, and the body as a site of food memory. The research materializes in food map posters and performative dinners that map out the stories and spectacular trails of migration of plants, herbs and spices—to unfold the politics of the food on our tables.

Alongside the food research is an on-going project called the Aesthetics of the Political, an exploration of how a political position is embedded in the aesthetic choices in an artwork. This research has materialized in many forms (performances, podcast, curated program) and is also developed as a learning program for art students who are engaged with social and political issues in their work.
