What do you get when you bring together 2,800 students, a whole lot of singing, and a long-standing tradition? The Tilburg University Cantus (TUC)! 🎶

Students earn their ticket by actively contributing to the Tilburg community during TUC voor Tilburg Day. Once they’ve earned their spot, there’s only one thing left to do: celebrate!

Every year, the TUC marks the start of a new academic year, bringing students together for an evening full of music, friendship, and, of course, plenty of toasting. 🍻

“Use AI as a thinking amplifier, while ensuring that the university remains in control.”

This message ran as a common thread throughout the contributions of the speakers at the Opening of the Academic Year on August 31. Under the theme “AI as the new mechanical brain: checkmate for the university?” the program focused on our role as a university in the age of AI.

♟️Rector Magnificus Wim van de Donk remarked that the AI era marks “a time when the university may be more necessary than ever.” He emphasized that the metaphor of "checkmate" should not be understood as a doom scenario, but rather as an invitation to collaborate, seize opportunities, and do the necessary work.

♟️During the mini-lectures, our academics Paul van Geest, Eric Postma, Hannes Datta and Margriet Sitskoorn explored AI from different perspectives, from what it means to be human and who should remain in control, to the role of AI in education and society.

♟️Student-assessor Tinus van Bommel reflected on the importance of personal growth as a student. He warned against using AI as a shortcut to avoid essential moments of struggle, as it is often through these struggles that real learning takes place.

Celebrate the opening of the academic year with us on Monday, August 31, as we explore the role of the university in the age of AI.

Several speakers will address these questions:
🏫 University Professor Paul van Geest reflects on how AI impacts the heart of academia and how we can best engage with it.
🏫 Professor of Artificial Intelligence Eric Postma explains what AI can and cannot do, and why it will fundamentally change scientific research.
🏫 Associate Professor of Marketing Hannes Datta advocates that students learn best about AI by experimenting, not just following rules.
🏫 Professor of Clinical Neuropsychology Margriet Sitskoorn illustrates how AI can support research into the effects of poverty on the brain and ways to break the cycle of poverty.
