NISIS The Netherlands Interuniversity School for Islamic Studies (NISIS) is a national research school in the field of the study of Islam and Muslim societies.

The main aim of NISIS is to advance cooperation between the ten participating universities in the Netherlands and Belgium. By bringing together the academic expertise of scholars in the field of Islam and Muslim societies, NISIS offers both junior and senior researchers a forum for interdisciplinary research collaboration and national and international networking opportunities which simultaneously

benefits the training of PhD candidates and research master students. Against this background, NISIS is committed to promoting interuniversity and international cooperation, for instance by organising annual Spring and Autumn Schools, each time at another (Dutch) university, on prominent themes pertaining to Islamic studies, which have attracted both national and international researchers.

🎬 Join us for an inspiring evening with NISIS!

On Thursday, April 23, NISIS hosts its third film screening in collaboration with a group of French documentary makers. The evening begins with networking drinks, where NISIS Junior members can connect with Senior members from across the field.

As a unique research school uniting nine Dutch universities, NISIS fosters interdisciplinary exchange through workshops, seminars, conferences, and seasonal schools. With Utrecht University hosting NISIS until the end of 2026, we’re celebrating our vibrant portfolio of events by bringing our community—and the wider public—together.

Students and scholars of Islamic studies are warmly invited to meet, exchange ideas, and watch the documentary Harar, the Forgotten Islamic City. The film offers a rare glimpse into the lives of Harar’s inhabitants, capturing a historic Islamic city whose days may be numbered.

✨ Come for the conversation, stay for the film.

📢 Open Call: Little Man, What Now?

We’re sharing this interdisciplinary open call from Simulacrum, the art history and critical theory journal of the University of Amsterdam (UvA).

The upcoming issue, titled Little Man, What Now?, invites writers and artists to reflect on life under precarity, bureaucracy, and permanent crisis — not as a problem to be solved, but as a question to be activated.

They are looking for daring, interdisciplinary contributions (essay, free text, poetry, or visual work) that:
• Situate the theme within art historical and cultural historical frameworks
• Or explore it as a contemporary emotional condition shaped by political, economic, and ecological crises

🗓 Deadline: March 2, 2026
📄 Written submissions: max. 2000 words (.doc/.docx)
🖼 Visual submissions: .pdf
📧 Send to: [email protected]

Simulacrum is a quarterly thematic magazine reflecting on arts and culture, offering a high-quality platform for students and experts alike.
