November 15: Pop-up lecture from Dr. Stefano Lugo on the Nobel prize

The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2022 was awarded jointly to Ben Bernanke, Douglas Diamond and Philip Dybvig, for having significantly improved our understanding of the role of banks in the economy, particularly during financial crises.

In a pop-up lecture on Tuesday 15 November from 13.00 to 14.00 hrs., dr. Stefano Lugo, Associate Professor in Finance, will reflect on the academic work of the 2022 Nobel laureates. An introduction will be provided by prof. Charles van Marrewijk. There will of course be room for discussion and questions during this pop-up lecture. You are very welcome to join!

Modern banking research clarifies why we have banks, how to make them less vulnerable in crises and how bank collapses exacerbate financial crises. The foundations of this research were laid by Ben Bernanke, Douglas Diamond and Philip Dybvig in the early 1980s. Their analyses have been of great practical importance in regulating financial markets and dealing with financial crises. An important finding in their research is why avoiding bank collapses is vital.

Er zijn vergoedingen beschikbaar voor 75 masterstudenten van de Universiteit Utrecht. De universiteit vergoedt maximaal 500 euro per persoon voor reis-, verblijf- en toegangskosten van een bijeenkomst in Europa tussen 1 oktober 2022 en 31 augustus 2023. Heb je interesse? Dr. Martijn Huysmans has received the PPE Teacher of the Year Award 2022!

Assistant Professor Dr. Martijn Huysmans has received the Teacher of the Year 2022 award from the students of the PPE programme (Politics-Philosophy-Economics). Dr. Martijn Huysmans is an assistant professor at USE and a core teacher at the PPE programme. The latter is an interdisciplinary programme of 4 departments within Utrecht University: USE, Governance, Philosophy and History. The award was presented by the student association Metis at the PPE End of the Year Conference.

Student-vacature: REBO-bestuur 2022-2023 ❗️

De faculteit Recht, Economie, Bestuur en Organisatie is voor het studiejaar 2022-2023 op zoek naar een betrokken en gemotiveerde student die zitting wil nemen in het REBO-bestuur. Heb jij een visie op goed onderwijs? Wil je de belangen van ongeveer 5.750 studenten vertegenwoordigen? Spreekt het je aan om mee te draaien in het bestuur van een complexe organisatie? Dan is deze functie iets voor jou!

Het REBO-bestuur bestaat uit de decaan, de vice-decanen Onderwijs en Impact, de faculteitsdirecteur en de studentassessor. In het bestuur worden op basis van ontwikkelingen binnen het onderwijs en onderzoek facultaire strategieën en beleid bepaald. Zo wordt nagedacht en besloten over onderwijs- en onderzoeksbeleid, financiën, communicatie en de profilering van opleidingen en het onderzoek aan de faculteit.

Subjects wanted for ELSE experiments 🔬

At the Experimental Laboratory for Sociology and Economics (ELSE) at Utrecht University we study human behavior related to social science- and economics questions in an experimental manner. For this purpose, we are looking for people who are interested to participate in our experiments. During such experiments, up to 30 participants participate at a time, using the computers in our computer room to interact anonymously and answer short questionnaires.

We always pay participants; on average, participants earn between 8 and 10 EURO per hour, but this amount can vary between studies. The exact amount of money received typically depends on the decisions made by oneself and other participants. The experiments do not involve other tasks than making decisions during anonymous interactions, and answering questions via the computer, unless this is explicitly mentioned in an invitation.

Their activities contribute towards tackling and solving societal issues and thus the creation of ‘sustainable, healthy, safe, and fair societies’. DutchSE is looking for a new board❗️

DutchSE, founded in 2015 to foster student entrepreneurship in The Netherlands, connects, supports and inspires local student entrepreneurship organizations as the national umbrella organisation for student entrepreneurship. DutchSE connects local student entrepreneurship organizations, relevant national institutes and DutchSE partners with each other, in order to make a more cohesive entrepreneurship ecosystem in the Netherlands. To make this happen, the organization is run by a 5 person student board who commit part-time to this cause. Together with 4 other students, you can become a member of a board with immediate achievements and national impact.
