Still busy finding the right master programme? We asked Juul van den Hoog to share her experiences with New Media & Digital Culture 💫

"After completing my programme at the University of Applied Science, I felt I needed to gain more knowledge in the field of new media. I wanted to challenge myself and get a deeper understanding of new media practices and be able to critically reflect on them in relation to contemporary society and culture. I have always had an interest in new media and technological developments. This Master Programme allowed me to combine these research fields. In a few weeks I will be starting an internship at a digital marketing agency where I will conduct research on design efficiency."

Still busy finding the right master programme? We asked to share his experiences with New Media & Digital Culture 💫

"I chose this master programme because I wanted to learn how to approach technology from a more critical perspective. During my Bachelor of Communication, at a University of Applied Sciences, I learned to have a very tech-optimist approach regarding new media and new technologies. Within this programme we learn to critically reflect on pre-assumptions and the possible concequences for society, which I like very much. The theories we study are diverse, we learn for example about the work of French philosophers like Foucault and to apply their way of thinking on contemporary technologies. But we also learn more recent theories about data, GIF’s and memes, what makes this master program very diverse and unique in my opinion."

"NMDC created a deeper understanding of new media and technologies. The program created a critical and original way of thinking about innovations in contemporary society. A useful competence in the labor market."

Welcome to the page of the international Master’s programme in New Media & Digital Culture!

The programme builds upon Utrecht University’s many years of experience in researching the impact of technological innovations on audio-visual media.

It examines new media as present-day manifestations of cultural, social, political, and economic developments that have known similar expressions in different media technologies at different times.

Our students are therefore well-trained in taking the many different cultural and historical aspects of digital media into account when critically analysing topics such as datafication, smart cities, applied games, social media identities, mobile communication, and internet actvism.
