Stichting PAC organiseert het jaarlijkse PAC-symposium voor chemie studenten.

Het PAC-symposium is een jaarlijks symposium voor scheikundestudenten dat wordt georganiseerd door vier studieverenigingen: het Amsterdams Chemisch Dispuut, Chemisch Dispuut Leiden, Utrechtse Scheikunde Studentenvereniging "Proton" en Vereniging van ChemieStudenten aan de Vrije Universiteit. Het doel van het symposium is de kennis verdiepen door vooraanstaande onderzoekers uit te

nodigen, maar tegelijk ook het beeld van chemie te verbreden door mensen uit zoveel mogelijk verschillende velden uit te nodigen. The PAC-Symposium is a yearly occurring symposium organised for chemistry students, the symposium is organised by 4 study associations: Amsterdams Chemisch Dispuut, Chemisch Dispuut Leiden, Utrechtse Scheikunde Studentenvereniging ‘Proton’ en Vereniging van ChemieStudenten aan de Vrije Universiteit. The goal of the symposium is to deepen the knowledge by inviting prominent researchers and at the same time broaden your perspective on chemistry by giving a podium to as much fields as is possible.

Heb jij passie voor scheikunde? En lijkt het jou leuk om betrokken te zijn in het organiseren van een symposium? Meld je dan aan voor het bestuur van stichting PAC. Je leert er veel nieuwe vaardigheden en ontmoet leuke mensen waarmee je het symposium gaat organiseren. Daarnaast staat het ook mooi op het cv. Benieuwd wat je dan moet doen? Hieronder staan vier van de functies die er in het PAC bestuur te vinden zijn. De andere drie kan je in onze vorige post vinden. Geinteresseerd? Stuur ons dan een mailtje op [email protected]!

Commissaris Acquisitie:
De commissaris acquisitie zorgt voor binnenhalen van geld. Je zorgt voor alle zaken die nodig zijn voor het doen van aanvragen en onderhoudt het contact met universiteiten, stichtingen en bedrijven.

Commissaris Locatie & Logistiek:
Als commissaris locatie en logistiek ben je verantwoordelijk voor alle zaken op de symposiumdag zelf. Je regelt een mooie locatie, lunch en aankleding en zorgt voor een draaiboek zodat de symposiumdag vlekkeloos kan verlopen.

Commissaris Sprekers:
De commissaris sprekers zorgt voor het uitnodigen van interessante sprekers. Je bent daarbij verantwoordelijk voor het binnenhalen van sprekers, het contact onderhouden en ervoor zorgen dat alle sprekers weten waar ze aan toe zijn op de dag zelf.

Commissaris Website en vormgeving:
Als commissaris website en vormgeving kun je jouw creativiteit loslaten om de uitstraling van het bestuur en het symposium zo goed mogelijk te maken. Ook houdt de website en de social media accounts bij en maakt posters en flyers om het symposium te promoten.

Lijkt het jou leuk om volgend jaar betrokken te zijn in de organisatie van het PAC symposium? Dan ontvangen we graag een mailtje van je op [email protected]! Mocht je nog niet zo goed weten wat je dan zou moeten doen, dan kan je hieronder drie van de zeven verschillende functies zien waaruit het PAC bestuur bestaat en wat zij doen voor het symposium. De andere vier komen volgende week aan bod. Verder kan je op onze website pacsymposium.nl nog meer vinden over de opbouw van stichting PAC en wat we in het verleden hebben gedaan.

Voorzitter:
De voorzitter zorgt voor het overzicht en houdt alle koppen bij elkaar. Je zorgt ervoor dat alle neuzen dezelfde kant op kijken en dat iedereen weet wat er te doen staat. Je maakt de agenda’s, leidt de vergaderingen en je brengt vorm in de planningen.

Secretaris:
De secretaris houdt alles bij wat er gebeurt binnen het bestuur. Je maakt mooie en overzichtelijke notulen, je houdt de mail-inbox bij, je houdt het contact met verenigingen en je schrijft eventuele nieuwsbrieven.

Penningmeester:
Als penningmeester ben je verantwoordelijk voor de financiële zaken rond het symposium. Je stelt een begroting en afrekening op en zorgt ervoor dat de inkomsten en uitgaven netjes worden bijgehouden.

Het bestuur is prima naast je studie te doen, je hebt de kans om te netwerken en waardevolle ervaring op te doen! Je ontmoet nieuwe mensen en het staat ook nog goed op je cv! Het bestuur bestaat uit zeven functies: voorzitter, secretaris, penningmeester, commissaris acquisitie, commissaris locatie en logistiek, commissaris sprekers en commissaris website en vormgeving. We willen graag iedereen bedanken die aan het symposium heeft meegeholpen of bezocht heeft. We hebben een geweldige dag gehad en we hopen dat jullie er net zoveel van hebben genoten hebben als wij! Het was ons eerste online symposium en het heeft vele veranderingen mogen ondergaan, maar we kunnen met trots zeggen dat het symposium van dit jaar een mooie toevoeging is aan de vele symposia die stichting PAC al georganiseerd heeft. Sprekers, panelisten en PhD’ers, hartstikke bedankt! We hopen iedereen volgend jaar weer te zien.

We would like to thank everyone who contributed or visited the PAC Symposium this year. We had a great day and we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did! It was our first online symposium and it has undergone many changes, but we can proudly say that this year's symposium is a nice addition to the many symposia that the PAC foundation has already organized. This symposium is almost here, but there are still some aspects to reveal. Among of them are our panellists, who will discuss topics important for today’s chemists. Our panellists come from a range of academics and industry experts to ensure a broad perspective in the discussions.

Our panellists:
Moderator - Puck Moll
Puck quit her career in academia early to focus on her long-cherished dream: writing about science. Especially about all those diverse themes that chemistry and life sciences are rich in. Now she is an editor-in-chief at the C2W and of course, our very own moderator

Prof. Dr. Pieter Bruijnincx
Bruijnincx is a professor of Sustainable Chemistry and Catalysis at the UU. His group mainly focuses on using homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis in the transformation of biomass and CO2 into renewable chemical building blocks.

Prof. Dr. Ir. Séverine Le Gac
Le Gac is an adjunct professor at the UT, where she leads a team called ”Applied Microfluidics for BioEngineering Research – AMBER” Her research interests focus on the use of microfluidic devices for biological and medical applications.

Dhr. Alexander Wolters
Wolters is since 2018 a research chemist at Ioniqa Technologies, a company focussing on chemical recycling of PET waste. In his current role, he mainly focusses on the impurities present in this process and how these can be handled.

Prof. Dr. Ir. Earl Goetheer
Goetheer is a principal scientist at TNO, working on the development of CO2 capture and utilization processes. Next to this Earl is amongst others the technical lead of the power to chemicals program within VOLTACHEM, which connects the electricity sector, equipment sector, and chemical industry.

Our third and final parallel speaker to be announced is Dr. Chris Slootweg.

Chris Slootweg was born in Haarlem (The Netherlands) in 1978 and received his undergraduate education from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in 2001. After earning his Ph.D. in 2005 under the supervision of Prof. Koop Lammertsma, he pursued postdoctoral studies at the ETH Zürich with Peter Chen. In 2006, he returned to VU to initiate his independent career. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2014, and moved to the University of Amsterdam in 2016. The mission of his laboratory at the UvA is to educate students at the intersection of fundamental physical organic chemistry, main-group chemistry, and circular chemistry.

In this lecture, He will highlight the importance of using waste as resource as well as stress the need to develop Circular Technologies, which use chemistry as enabling tool, to target the conservation of critical raw materials (element scarcity) as well as contribute to solving pressing waste problems. Such an endeavor will combine molecular design and synthesis with the environmental fate and impact of current products targeting safe by design (no persistent, bio-accumulative, and toxic compounds; green chemistry) and design for re-use, recovery and recycling (circular chemistry). He will detail his lab's bottom-up physical (in)organic chemistry approach to develop novel chemical conversions using one-electron processes that aim at using dinitrogen and methane as resource.

The PAC-symposium is an annual chemistry symposium for students by students. As the name implies, we, the PAC foundation board, are responsible for the organization of the symposium. Each year the board is made up of students of the 4 different study associations: U.S.S. Proton, ACD, CDL and VCSVU.
This year's symposium theme is ‘Impact’, where we make the connection between the highly specialized academic world and our current society. This way we hope to emphasize what these ‘niche’ studies do for our everyday life and the impact they make on a larger scale.

The symposium will include one plenary lecture (with Nobel prize winner Stanley Whittingham) and one parallel session, where three different speakers (Sylvestre Bonnet, Anouk Rijs, Chris Slootweg) will tell something about their research. This year will also include a panel where five chemists, both academics and industry experts, will discuss the big topics in chemistry. Led by our expert moderator Puck Moll (editor-in-chief at C2W). There will also be a special segment dedicated to PhD students, where they will show off their research in a video, giving you a look at what is happening in the labs right now!

The symposium will be on March the 4th at 10:45 AM and will take place on an online platform for which you can register at pacsymposium.nl. You have till february the 28th to register for the symposium, so do not decide too late if you want to join.

The next parralel speaker to be announced is Prof. Dr. Sylvester Bonnet.

Sylvestre Bonnet is Full Professor in Bioinorganic Chemistry at Leiden University. He obtained his PhD in 2005 at the University of Strasbourg, France, in the group of Nobel Laureate Jean-Pierre Sauvage.
His lecture will deal with his journey as a photochemist in the world of anticancer phototherapy and how this journey has pushed him to develop his knowledge way beyond chemistry, towards biology, cancer models, and oncology. He will first describe the photochemistry of the compounds developed in his group, then discuss the different in vitro cancer models they have used to test them, and finally their efforts to show activity in vivo, as the first steps towards clinical trials.
