This week we wrapped up our research activities in Marsaxlokk, Malta, as part of the EU Horizon 2020 PERICLES Heritage project. On the 25th of October a final workshop was co-organised by Wageningen University and the Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Animal Rights of Malta and hosted by Marsaxlokk Local Council. During the event, several representatives of the community and participants of the project gathered to evaluate the work done over the last three years and to look for collaborations to continue with the project's legacy.

Despite of the COVID-19 impact, the impact and relevance of the PERICLES initiatives were highlighted as ways to reconnect Maltese communities with the coastal culinary heritage and to promote sustainable fish consumption through the Fishing for Recipes contest. At the same time, the recently awarded initiative of digital story-telling to developed cultural tourism experiences was celebrated by the participants and considered as an effective approach to bridge the local community of Marsaxlokk and the visitors. During the wrap up event, more collaborations were discussed as means to follow up the legacy of the project and the role of various entities to support such continuation. As for the follow ups, the Fishing for Recipes concept will continue with new editions and aiming to reach a broader audience. At the same time, more connections amongst local stakeholders were made to further explore possibilities to enhance the development of cultural-based experiences in Marsaxlokk.

On Friday 5 November Professor Jarkko Saarinen (University of Oulu, Finland) will be visiting the Wageningen campus. Prof Saarinen is a well known name in research on sustainable tourism and tourism and natural resources governance. We are pleased that he is willing to give a presentation for staff and students on Friday the 5th at 11:00 in the morning at the Leeuwenborch building (B0063). Feel free to join us and take the opportunity to listen to the presentation and ask questions

Our work on digital storytelling in Marsaxlokk, Malta, has been awarded! ENP researcher Machiel Lamers is currently in Athens to attend the annual conference of the European Cultural Tourism Network (ETCN). On behalf of the ENP research team that includes Jordi Vegas-Macias and Hilde Toonen, as well as the fishing community of Marsaxlokk in Malta, he received the 3rd prize in the ECTN Awards in the category of digitalisation.
As part of the work performed in Malta we tried to reconnect the fishing community to the growing tourism development in the village by giving them a voice: we co-produced several audioguides for walking and boating tours with local community representatives on the fishing heritage present in Marsaxlokk. This way the community is able to directly speak to both domestic and international visitors to the village.
We thank all those that have been involved, particularly our Maltese partners. This Award is also a recognition of their work and dedication. Next week we will organise a final meeting in Marsaxlokk, to celebrate and evaluate our work, and to make future plans. More news to follow soon.
