Centre for International Health - CIH Centre for International Health is an interfaculty Centre for research and training in global health.

Established in 1988, the Centre for International Health (CIH) at the University of Bergen (UiB) is an inter-Faculty Centre for research and training within the field of global health. OUR VISION
To provide excellent global health research and training contributing to improved health and equity. THE MISSION OF THE CENTRE
CIH works in partnerships with research institutions in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), and aims to:

Coordinate and conduct high quality, relevant and innovative global health research
Teach, supervise, and facilitate learning in global health
Disseminate research and engage in policy discussions on pertinent global health issues

GLOBAL HEALTH
In accordance with Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG3), CIH defines “global health” as an area of research, education and practice that focuses on improving health and achieving health equity, especially in LMIC. The field of global health promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and involves subject areas both within and beyond the health sciences. For CIH, mutual post-graduate capacity strengthening and genuine partnerships with implementing institutions are integrated and essential features of global health, in compliance with SDG4, on Education and SDG17, on Partnerships. PARTNERSHIP
CIH aims to strengthen capacity in global health through research and training in partnership with academic institutions and other research entities in LMICs. An important prerequisite for establishing mutual and sustainable research partnerships is that genuine collaborative effort is involved in the conception, development, and implementation of projects. SCIENTIFIC PRIORITIES
In line with the SDG agenda, CIH will focus on collaborative research and capacity strengthening to promote improved health and equity in LMICs. We will concentrate on the ‘unfinished agenda’; the leading social, environmental and political determinants of the burden of disease in LMIC, including maternal, adolescent and child health and infectious diseases, as well as nutrition, child growth and development. Priority will also be given to non-communicable diseases and injuries, in particular chronic respiratory diseases and mental health. We will also engage in research on health policy, health systems and health consequences of migration, climate change and inequality. CIH will emphasize research on implementation and interventions that can cost-effectively and equitably improve health.

We are pleased to share that Professor Thorkild Tylleskär is attending the 22nd CARTA Partners’ Annual Forum in Malawi, hosted by Kamuzu University of Health Sciences.

Every year, CARTA partners come together for a week of conversations, reflection, and collaboration in one of the African partner institutions. This year, we are in Malawi, hosted by Kamuzu University of Health Sciences for the 22nd CARTA Partners’ Annual Forum, taking place from September 21–24, 2026

The week-long engagements bring together representatives from CARTA partner institutions, funders, CARTA leadership and secretariat, leads of CARTA research hubs and Malawi-based fellows for conversations that shape the direction of the program and strengthen the partnerships behind it.

This year’s Forum is especially significant. 2026 marks the beginning of CARTA’s new Strategic Plan for 2026–2030. The Forum provides an important moment to come together, take stock of implementation progress, deepen institutional ownership, and launch the strategy, formally marking the next chapter.

Over the four days, partners will take stock of CARTA’s performance and progress, with keen interest on CARTA research hubs, financial sustainability and compliance, curriculum review and, critically, the institutional plans required to turn the 2026–2030 Strategic Plan from ambition into action.

As CARTA operationalizes its new strategic chapter, the conversation in Malawi is therefore not only about where the consortium has been, but about what partners must collectively do differently to build stronger African research institutions, nurture the next generation of research leaders and sustain CARTA’s impact for years to come.

Health Resource Allocation Game

Today and tomorrow our students are playing the “Health Resource Allocation Game” developed by KIT Royal Tropical Institute, Amsterdam. The groups are tasked to set up a health system as efficiently as possible within the budget limits.
Tomorrow, the ‘patients’ will arrive to the health system and it will be possible to see how efficient the system is.
