Title: "Can technology free time? Experimental evidence from an AI chatbot helping caseworkers solve employers' hiring difficulties"

Abstract: In late 2024, the French public employment service introduced a new AI tool to support caseworkers dedicated to assisting client recruiters in their hiring decisions. Caseworkers support employers through two channels: screening applications from job seekers who apply on their own, and sourcing candidates who have not applied. The tool was designed to help caseworkers when sourcing candidates, and save them time for other tasks. We leverage the randomised implementation of this intervention to measure its impact on job-filling probabilities. We find that the intervention successfully increased the probability of filling posted jobs by between 10 and 15 per cent. While the intervention was intended solely to facilitate the sourcing of job seekers who had not initially applied for the job, we find that the increase in hires comes from both job seekers who were sourced and job seekers who had applied on their own and were screened by the caseworker. Our interpretation is that the AI tool freed up caseworkers’ time, allowing them to devote more time to screening applications (and other tasks).

Thank you for a great seminar, Roland! 👏

📣 New publication in Nature Human Behaviour!

When is inequality fair? And why can people who agree on the ideal of meritocracy still disagree sharply about redistribution?

Alexander W. Cappelen and Bertil Tungodden have published “Meritocracy and Inequality Acceptance” as part of the Nature Human Behaviour special issue Inequality in a Complex World.

🗣️ Andreas Kotsadam has been visiting FAIR this week and was today’s FAIR Seminar speaker!

Andreas is a senior researcher at the Frisch Centre, a professor at the University of Oslo, and affiliated with EGAP and CESifo.

He presented "Factory Jobs and Fertility: Long-term Experimental Evidence from Ethiopia".

Abstract: We conducted an experiment with 27 factories in Ethiopia to test the widespread hypothesis that formal employment among women reduces fertility. Tracking respondents over eight years, we find that women who were randomly offered a job had more children than the control group. The effect on fertility emerged once the effect on wage employment faded away, around three years after baseline. There are clear effects on household income and savings, but not on bargaining power or marriage. These patterns are consistent with a Beckerian model in which the income effect dominates the substitution effect and households are credit constrained.
