“Both the curriculum and the student work that I have seen at Bergen School of Architecture points towards an anthropological and ecological architecture, which is the most important direction that I think architecture should take advance in the current phase of western culture. A culture threatened by false techno-economic rationalism, consumerist materialism, shallow internationalism, and detachment of architecture and life at large from their mytho-poetic essence.”

Reclaiming the Space: Studio as Site of Civic Experimentation

In this lecture, Saman Qayyum explores how public space in Pakistan is continually regulated, restricted, and reclaimed, from gated communities and heritage sites governed by security and control, to informal markets and community-led parks that quietly assert civic presence against those same systems. Rather than treating this tension as a subject for study alone, Saman Qayyum will discuss how it has shaped her own teaching practice, particularly through an urban design studio conducted with students in Haripur, KPK, Pakistan. There, students were asked not to design finished solutions, but to test ideas of access, ownership, and everyday democracy directly on site, through participatory and culture-driven methods of inquiry. Drawing on selected student projects, Qayyum will reflect on what it means to treat the studio itself as a space of experimentation and contestation, mirroring the very urban dynamics it seeks to understand, and on what this approach can offer architectural pedagogy more broadly, in Pakistan and beyond.

The Open-Form Partisan Movement. The Oskar and Zofia Hansen House as a museum

The lecture will present the activities of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, located in the home of the architect couple Zofia and Oskar Hansen, where the Hansens lived and worked.

The house possesses a distinctive architectural character, original compositional, material, and functional solutions, and fully embodies the ideas of the Open Form.

It is one of the few works by the Hansens that was realized in accordance with their wishes. The museum invites visitors into the house, but at the same time poses questions: How can we create a museum in line with the idea of the Open Form? How can we create an institution focused on participation, process, and a shift in the hierarchy between an artist and the viewer? How can we ensure that the Hansens’ architecture remains an inspiring point of reference for the artistic work of future generations of students?

Tomasz Fudala (b.1980) is an art and architecture historian and curator based in Warsaw. He works at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw from the beginning of the project. He is a curator of the Oskar and Zofia Hansen House in Szumin (2018-) and WARSAW UNDER CONSTRUCTION FESTIVAL (2009-).

He also curated several exhibitions, seminars and public programs on modern and contemporary architecture. His writings have appeared in Domus, Artforum and Autoportret magazine. He has received the Jerzy Stajuda Prize for Art Criticisim (2017) and SARP (Association of Polish Architects) Bene Merentibus Medal in recognition of his contribution to the development of Polish Architecture and the Association of Polish Architects.

Bio:

Saqqra is a research and architecture practice founded by Marwa el Mubark and Nile Bridgeman, based in London and Cardiff. The studio's name Saqqra, means bedrock or ‘origin'; an understanding of environmental histories, ecologies and cultures of making shapes their process. The studio’s approach has led them to working in many sensitive locations, including listed buildings and conservation areas and across various typologies, settings, and scales; from private homes to public pavilions, commercial premises to community projects, and landscapes to infrastructures. They believe that strategic efforts made to reduce climatic impact should find meaningful architectural expression; where the chosen materials, arrangement and construction method impart character. This understanding is supported by their teaching and research practice acting as formative backdrop to live projects. Saqqra was featured in New Architects 5, the ‘definitive index of the UK’s best new architects’.
