A new genomic study published in Evolutionary Applications, led by Atal Saha (UiA/CCR) and with contribution from IMR and international partners, unravels the spatial population structure and demographic history of the white anglerfish (Lophius piscatorius, foto: Wikimedia Commons) across its geographic distribution. Using high-density SNP markers, Saha et al. reveal fine-scale genetic differentiation that challenges long-standing assumptions of population panmixia in European waters. The analyses highlight distinct evolutionary lineages shaped by historical demographic fluctuations and oceanic barriers, providing a clearer understanding of stock connectivity. These findings demonstrate that broad-scale management units may not reflect underlying biological boundaries for this commercially important species. Integrating high-resolution genomic insights into future assessment frameworks will be essential for developing climate-resilient and sustainable anglerfish fisheries management.
