Cooperation, knowledge-sharing, and long-term partnerships are key to supporting justice reform in Ukraine. 🤝

NCHR visited Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk to meet partners working with children's rights, investigative interviewing, and criminal justice education.

Together with our longstanding partner JustGroup, we met with Ukraine's working group developing a national protocol for investigative interviewing of children, contributing Norwegian experience on child-friendly justice and investigative interviewing.

We also visited King Danylo University (official), a new partnership on pre-trial investigation, investigative interviewing, and human rights in criminal justice. The cooperation aims to support the next generation of legal professionals in Ukraine and is funded by HK-dir The Directorate for Higher Education and Skills through the Nansen EDU Programme, Norad - Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation.

The visit concluded with productive discussions with representatives of Norway's Nansen Support Programme for Ukraine on strengthening partnership capacity and compliance. 🌱

How do we strengthen accountability and the rule of law in times of war? ⚖️

Justice is built case by case, interview by interview.

Ukrainian investigators, prosecutors, and academics recently met in Budapest to further strengthen investigative interviewing practices grounded in human rights, professionalism, and evidence-based methods. Justice reform requires strong investigative capacities, respect for procedural rights, and a commitment to continuous learning. 🤝

The training was part of a broader effort to support effective, ethical, and human rights-compliant institutions in Ukraine.

The training was organised by the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights and JustGroup, with support from the Nansen Support Programme for Ukraine, Norad, and delivered by trainers from the Norwegian Police University College Politihøgskolen and Kripos.

What if the key to better criminal investigations wasn't asking harder questions, but listening better? 👂

For the past five years, a team of researchers and police instructors in Brazil have been doing exactly that: replacing coercive interrogation with investigative interviewing, a science-backed approach that is producing more reliable evidence, more cooperative witnesses, and — perhaps surprisingly — more trust between police and communities.

We spoke with Dr. William Weber Cecconello of CogJus- Laboratório de Ensino e Pesquisa em Cognição e Justiça to find out how they did it, what changed, and what comes next:

For the past five years, a small team of researchers and police instructors across Brazil have been trying to get law enforcement to listen more, and the results, they said, have surprised even them.

How do we turn the Méndez Principles into day-to-day practice across different legal systems and policing cultures? 🌏

Earlier this month, 45 researchers, trainers, and practitioners from 14 countries gathered in Bodø, Norway for the workshop "From Research to Practice: Implementing Investigative Interviewing Globally", hosted by the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights, the ImpleMéndez COST Action, and the Norwegian Police University College.

The workshop provided a valuable opportunity to exchange experiences, identify shared challenges, and explore practical strategies for implementing investigative interviewing based on human rights and evidence-based practices. From Brazil and Indonesia to Ukraine and the UK, participants shared lessons learned from reform efforts in their respective countries, contributing to the development of a forthcoming implementation guide that will support the global application of the Méndez Principles.

A big thank you to all participants for contributing their expertise, insights, and commitment to strengthening justice systems worldwide 👏

This summer, Bodø became a testbed for the future of police interviewing: 45 participants from 14 countries gathered to share practical knowledge and experiences. The event focused on implementing human rights-based investigative interviewing methodology — a promising step forward for the field, ...
