Kunstakademiet The Academy of Arts in Tromsø is a department at the University of Tromsø - The Arctic University Norway. The Academy was started in 2007.

The Academy is a subdivision of the The Arctic University Museum of Norway and Academy of Fine Arts. Situated in the arctic city of Tromsø, the Academy offers a particular vantage point towards an increasingly significant geopolitical region; The Arctic—with its rich history of exploration, science, trade, culture, and cohabitation between indigenous and Norwegian populations. The Academy host the world’s northernmost fine arts school which in addition to Fine Art includes programmes in Landscape Architecture and Creative Writing. The Academy is a relatively small institution, which makes for a good shared atmosphere by students, professors, lecturers and other staff members. Joint excursions and other activities further enhance the social environment.

Artist Talk with Jenny Sunesson and Åsa Stjerna!

📅 2nd of November
🕒 15:15–17:00
📍 Meet at Kunstakademiet, Grønnegata 1, 1515, then you will be taken down to PUST. The artist talk will take place outdoors, so dress warmly and appropriately for the weather (there is a chance of rain)

Welcome to an artist presentation and a joint listening experience with Jenny Sunesson and Åsa Stjerna at Torghuken, Tromsø/Romsa. Below the harbor, a Beast and a Swarm take shape via a site-specific, 24-channel sound installation. Through the sea creatures the Beast and the Swarm, harbor stories and changing conditions
of marine life materialise. Local field recordings and the vocalisation of threatened and extinct marine species, give these conditions a resonant embodiment. How can sound and listening shift our experience of a familiar place? What does it mean to work artistically with the sea as a public space? Through listening and conversation, Åsa and Jenny share the artistic process behind the work, and discuss issues of place, listening and ecological change.

The Beast and the Swarm has emerged in connection with the research project Arctic Auditories –Hydrospheres in the High North, where aquatic environments and listening are investigated as paths to knowledge about ecological change.

The event is open to everyone – welcome!

TERRAIN TRANSFORMATIONS

POP-UP EXHIBITION FRIDAY, 30 OCTOBER, 15:00–16:00

This year, the landscape architecture students in Studio 1 are working with Ørndalen, a former gneiss quarry and active landfill located at the northern tip of Tromsøya. This unique site serves as a landscape laboratory throughout the semester, with the overall objective of exploring the aesthetic and ecological potential of disturbed sites while challenging existing ideas of beauty and sustainability.

During October, the students explored how to convey the complex terrain transformations that Ørndalen has undergone as a quarry and landfill through both model work and flat-depth drawings. In these drawings, different moments in time are represented within the same composition, adding a sense of temporal depth to an otherwise flat drawing through the layering of information.

Venue: Project Room 4004, Academy of Arts, Grønnegata 1, 9008 Tromsø.

A warm welcome from Studio 1!

The event is open to everyone – welcome!

Info about the artist:

NON-SITE INSTALLATIONS

POP-UP EXHIBITION FRIDAY, 2 OCTOBER, 15:00–16:00

Following a workshop on time as a conceptual lens with architect and LANDLABS PhD fellow Bex Browne, the landscape architecture students of Studio 1 have been working on non-site installations, referencing the on-site installations developed during the workshop. The concept of the non-site is borrowed from the American artist Robert Smithson (1938–1973).

The workshop took place at Ørndalen, a former gneiss quarry and active landfill located at the northern tip of Tromsøya, which will serve as a landscape laboratory throughout the semester. The overall objective of Studio 1 2026 is to explore the aesthetic and ecological potential of disturbed sites while challenging existing ideas of beauty and sustainability.
