Members of the FACET group and their international collaborators have discovered unusual electric behavior in the material K₃[Nb₃O₆∣(BO₃)₂], where dipoles align in a noncollinear pattern. This arrangement produces a hybrid of antiferroelectric and ferroelectric properties. Using advanced microscopy, the team observed electrically switchable nanoscale regions with strikingly sharp boundaries, revealing how the antiferroelectric and ferroelectric behaviors coexist at the nanoscale. The work suggests that many materials with similarly complex dipole structures may host new, tunable electrical functionalities valuable for next generation electronics and sensors.

SOME NEWS MATTERS MORE THAN PUBLICATIONS, RANKINGS, AND METRICS

While missiles continue to hit parts of Ukraine, universities are still teaching. Students are still studying. Researchers are still building the future.

Today, our Norwegian-Ukrainian project, “BioMedMat-UA – Advanced Biomedical Materials and Engineering,” has been awarded funding through the Nansen EDU programme by the Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills (HK-dir).
