Why does a scratched QR code still scan?
A QR code is a grid of black and white squares. Scratch part of it and those squares are gone, but extra squares carry a backup of the data, so the scanner can rebuild what is missing. At the highest setting a QR code can lose about 30% and still scan. Codes like this, called error-correcting codes, also protect CDs and messages from space probes.
(The grid in the video is an illustration, not a working code.)
