Born in a poor family, her father married again after her mother died at a young age. In her childhood, she stayed with her (grandmother), and the only skill she learned was .
Married at a young age, she decided to work. "The Only Skill I had was Stitching".
Imagine her financial constraints, she could not afford even to buy a stitching machine. She made a group of like-minded women in her village and collected Rs.100 per head to buy a second-hand machine.
She stitched along with other women. Their emphasis on designs and quality won her regular and consistent orders, after the initial struggle.
Meanwhile, more and more women joined her group. Today her group of enterprising women from remote villages of Rajasthan has more than 30,000 women. And each one of them earns a minimum of Rs.15,000 per head.
Her work has been recognized all over the world by prestigious organizations. Harvard has invited her for a face-2-face interaction and lecture on how can empower and transform lives.
She recalls, "when we started, our group was of ten women of our village". The day we got our first order, they wanted us to deliver it in five days. But we kept working for the whole day and night and delivered it next day evening". Today this group exports all across the world.
Ruma not just helped transform the lives of these women and their families, but has also received immense admiration from Amitabh Bachchan, President Ram Nath Kovind, and Ashok Gehlot, Chief Minister of Rajasthan for her work.
