Nepal Knotcraft Centre Weaving nature, culture, and creativity into everyday life. Nepal Knotcraft Centre (NKC)is a social enterprise founded in 1984 by Mrs. Shyam Badan Shrestha.

Nepal Knotcraft Centre is a social enterprise preserving traditional weaving and natural-fibre crafts while creating sustainable livelihoods for women in Nepal. NKC is committed to partnering with women across Nepal in an effort to create sustainable livelihood opportunities, enhancing their sense of empowerment and opportunity. We employ hundreds of women from various Nepali ethnic groups, and target women coming from socially and economically deprived communities. As a centre we have organized and conducted various training across remote regions of Nepal. We have helped women to build on traditional skills that have guided them in producing marketable products using the readily available materials in their area. We take pride in successfully aiding women to develop new enterprises to enhance their skills and strive for empowerment over their own companies. All of our products are handcrafted in Nepal using native plant fibres and materials and we are committed to improving our techniques and production in order to ensure every product remains eco-friendly and of the highest quality.

Our journey with Himalayan Iris fiber began last year with curiosity, experimentation, and a simple question: what could this beautiful natural fiber become? After months of research and re-experimentation in Nepal, we discovered its wonderful potential for weaving. This learning then travelled across the Himalayas to Bhutan, where we had the privilege of working with the Dagala community, experimenting with two-pedal looms and witnessing beautiful weaving emerge from their skilled hands. More than a weaving exercise, it became a meaningful exchange of knowledge, patience, and passion for learning. Our heartfelt thanks to the Bhutan Youth Development Fund(YDF) team for their trust, compassion, and understanding, and to the Dagala community for embracing the process with such openness. For us, this is what craft can do connect two nations, carry knowledge across borders, and turn natural-fiber research into shared possibilities. We continue to learn, experiment, and make one fiber, one community, and one new possibility at a time….. ☘️

What began as a simple conversation has become a celebration of craftsmanship. We are proud to share Kathmandu Weave at T.NUA Exhibition 02 in Milan, Italy

What began as a joyful conversation soon unfolded into a beautiful journey of research, experimentation, craftsmanship, countless discussions, shared laughter, and the search for new meanings through traditional weaving. At Nepal Knotcraft Centre, we were honored with the opportunity to explore and collaborate with an inspiring team. Along the way came excitement, curiosity, and moments of panic, wondering if we could truly preserve the soul, authenticity, and emotions embedded within our craft traditions.
The answer was clear: trust the supreme hands of our artisans.
We allowed their skills, wisdom, and personal interpretations to guide the process. We searched for the right yarns and plant fibers, worked patiently with the loom, and followed wherever the warp and weft chose to take us. Every thread became a dialogue between heritage and imagination, giving new life and meaning to Kathmandu Weave. This creation is not only about a finished piece, it is about people, stories, experimentation, and the courage to reimagine tradition while remaining rooted in craftsmanship.

Our heartfelt gratitude to Sangeeta Thapa ji, who always thinks of us and believes in our work; Mauro, Tao, our founder Shyam Badan Shrestha and the entire team for envisioning and reimagining the Kathmandu Weave; and above all, to our extraordinary artisans whose hands transformed ideas into beautiful weavings. Together, we continue to weave stories, communities, and possibilities.
