Should ICAN Nepal Consider a Similar Program?

The introduction of BAA in India has sparked a conversation among Nepali CA aspirants. Currently, students under ICAN progress through CAP-I, CAP-II, and CAP-III. If a student completes CAP-II and their three years of articleship but struggles with the final barrier, they often lack a formal professional title despite possessing high-level expertise.

Why ICAN “Accounting Associate” would work in Nepal:

1. Market Recognition: In the Nepali job market, “CAP-II passed” is widely understood but lacks the formal weight of a designated title. A formal certificate would help students secure better roles in banking and corporate sectors.

2. Addressing the “Drop-out” Gap: Many talented students pause their studies due to financial or personal reasons after articleship. A BAA-style qualification ensures their years of labor aren’t “lost.”

3. Academic Credit: Just as ICAI is coordinating with the UGC, ICAN could collaborate with Tribhuvan University (TU) or Kathmandu University (KU) to grant credit exemptions or degree equivalence for students who reach this milestone.

4. Boost to Professional Morale: The transition from CAP-II to CAP-III is a psychological hurdle. Knowing there is a recognized “safety net” at the end of articleship could actually encourage more students to persist through the final level.
