The last three days our group spent time at Piritahi Marae on Waiheke island. We spent time immersed with a Māori family who welcomed us to their marae and made us feel at home while teaching us about their culture and values.

We hiked up Stoney batter, toured downtown, spent a morning at the beach, did a wine tasting, and ate so much home cooked food. 🩵

Jackrabbits we are BACK and learning about indigenous cultures again this year!

Today we started our journey to New Zealand by traveling out west. We stopped at Thunder Valley Community Development Corporation to learn about the great things they are doing to support their community on Pine Ridge.

After that we made our way to Rapid City where we hit up Elks theater for a showing of War Pony, a story showcasing 2 parallel journeys of Lakota men navigating their individual pathways to manhood.

Tomorrow we will be touring at Oyate Health Center and learning about services offered with Indian Health Services before we fly out to Auckland.

Stay tuned here for updates on our journey these next couple of weeks!

Hi guys, it’s Lauren and Gabby. Today we went to Norway and started at the Northern Sami museum. We then headed to the Sami center for contemporary art. We learned so much at both places. And ended the day with a nice swim and supper.

Today we went out into the forest and picked blueberries and mushrooms to bring back and use for lunch. Our guides sautéed the mushrooms over an open fire to put on a piece of toast. We used the berries to top off our dessert. Later on in the day we headed to another reindeer farm. Here we learned how a Sami, family operated, reindeer husbandry works. We fed the reindeer and heard numerous facts regarding the animals the Sami work with. We heard family stories, asked questions, and even learned how to catch a reindeer the Sami way.

We heard some more yoik during our lunch around the campfire today! Yoik is a traditional form of singing and storytelling in Sami culture.

Hello everybody, it’s Michael, Nick, and Cole. Today we went to Lemmenjoki National Park. We took the following boats up the Lemmenjoki river. We spent the day enjoying the scenery at the Ravadas Falls. We then proceeded further up the river to test our luck. We were searching for gold. We enjoyed a nice tour of a reindeer farm from our tour guides. Throughout the day we listened to stories about Sami culture and how this National Park is symbolic. Also, the reindeer stew was great!

Hey guys it’s Järvi, our trip’s jackrabbit mascot!

Today we went to a lookout hill to better visualize lake Inari. We saw beautiful landscapes, huge mushrooms, and wild blueberries! Then as a group we went on a cruise around lake Inari. We learned that lake is the third largest lake in Finland, and that 3,300 islands are found in the lake as well. After the cruise, we went to a Sámi history museum. Here we learned all about the trials and tribulations for the Sámi people in the past and in the present.

Did you know that atlantic salmon are endangered in Finland? This is all due to the invasive species pink salmon. This can be struggling for the Sámi people, as the atlantic salmon are protected and cannot be caught. This halts traditional ways of life for the Sámi during a very crucial cultural revitalization movement in the Inari region.

Sorry for the late post! Last night we arrived safely to Inari. Before dinner we had a Sami elder speak to us about their culture and language. Our first course for dinner included smoked trout and reindeer. Our main course was whitefish with vegetables, and dessert was squeeze cheese and cloudberries with caramel. We checked into our hotel around 10 pm and enjoyed a nice shower before bed. The sun may set, but it never reached full dark last night! We’re hoping it gets dark enough to see the northern lights in the next week!

Hey everyone, it's Mia and Emily!

Today was a short day at the Pipestone National Monument in Minnesota. While there, our guide informed us of the different types of native plants and how they were used by the local tribes. In the second picture, you can see a quarry that is currently used to harvest some of the pipestone. While in the visitor's center, we watched carving demonstrations of pipes and small figurines like turtles.

Thank you for helping all of us here in South Dakota, and now we are off to Finland!

Hey Everyone, it’s Himesh and Brayden,

Today, we visited the Equine Teaching Facility, where we did various activities with the horses there. We learned how to develop a bond with the horses and how our state of mind affects the horse.

We then visited the Indian Health Services Flandreau Health Center Clinic in Flandreau. Here we learned how the clinic works with the Tribal council, and how they factor in the wishes and the wants of the tribe into the treatment and the care they provide.

Thank you all for helping us broaden our horizons and learn new lessons.

Hello Everyone! It’s Georgia and Olivia!!

Today we started our abroad experience by traveling to Sisseton, SD from Brookings SD to visit a branch of Indian Health System (IHS). While we were there, we toured the facility and learned about how diversely healthcare can look for the Native American Population. We also discussed the importance of equal opportunities and health care for all.
We then traveled back to Brookings and ended our day with a presentation about the Oceti Sakowin culture. We then discussed how we can use these experiences in our future careers to better our patients in all aspects of healthcare.

Thank you all for taking the time to further expand our knowledge.
