Meet one of our Nursing graduates Linda Tolo 🎓🌟

“My grandfather got sick and unfortunately passed away due to a lack of knowledge about his health. I wanted to be an advocate not just for my family but for many others, especially Pacific families who may be struggling with the same issue.

After graduating high school, I went straight into studies at MIT. I chose MIT after attending a high school career day. I enjoyed the event and the learning spaces at MIT. The course itself was a challenge. Managing school, personal life and mental health was also a challenge. But I overcame it with the support of my family, friends I made at MIT, and the support services at MIT. Lecturers took time out of their lunch breaks and sometimes even outside of working hours to draw up mind maps and summarise content for us, which helped a lot.

The people make MIT unique - most definitely. The diversity of cultures I got to learn about and be friends with was amazing.

My qualification has most definitely helped me in my career. I still use some content from my classes to help me remember the whys in my current job.

My advice is to attend every lecture, and if you cannot make it – always make the time to go and do some self-learning. Find YOUR way of learning.”

Meet one of our engineering graduates from Kenya, Nick Oduol Odhiambo. 🎓🌟

"I’m from Kenya and prior to migrating to New Zealand I worked for over 10 years as a security expert and diplomat in Kenya and the EU. When I moved to New Zealand I wanted a different career so I chose a diploma in civil engineering so I could revisit and build on the knowledge from my first degree in surveying.

My choice to study with MIT was a very practical one. I have 2 young kids and my wife works full-time so I had to juggle study and family. I wanted something convenient to me, a place I could commute to easily. I also didn’t want to go to a university, I wanted a diploma that gave me hands-on experience, not just theory. Something I could touch and apply. Choosing MIT was a pretty easy choice for me.

MIT is very diverse – you see people there from everywhere in the world. It’s a big advantage as it brings in a wealth of knowledge and experience. They made me very feel welcome, like I was part of MIT regardless of where I was from, it gave me a sense of belonging.

As an immigrant, a spouse, a parent, and a mature student, MIT provided a very conducive space for me to retrain and achieve my career and family goals. The lecturers were very considerate, respectful and engaging. Being a mature student, you often do not have the luxury of time, you’re very driven, you know what you’re looking for and you grab it. I give credit to MIT’s lecturers who gave us extra special attention and support to succeed.

While studying I was also employed as a lab technician at MIT. This gave me extra practical experience and skills to develop further in ways I can’t measure. The kiwi professional life is so different from Kenya, so these experiences helped ease me into New Zealand culture and prepared me for a much larger and faster professional environments. I’m very grateful for that opportunity.

While I was a student MIT and the School of Engineering brought in a Career Fair with numerous employers in civil engineering. MIT does a brilliant job in connecting us with industry and I managed to secure employment with one of these companies (Watercare) before I graduated.

To mature students – if you are thinking of continuing your education, you should highly consider MIT. It’s such a wonderful space for people like us. I’m now working as a development engineer at Watercare doing very practical things, I’ve been put to very good use.

There’s high demand in this industry, you have to have practical experience, not just the theory. I can tell you for sure, you get that at MIT, you get your hands dirty, and industry looks for people who can roll up their sleeves and get hands-on. The market is looking for grads right now, they can’t get enough of them."

OMICRON CASES ON CAMPUSES

21 February, 2022

Kia ora koutou katoa,

I am writing with an update on our response to the rise in positive community cases of Omicron in Tāmaki Makaurau.

MIT has been notified of confirmed cases of the variant on our campuses.

We are working with Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education to identify if staff and students are considered Close Contacts of the cases. If you are a Close Contact we will email you with advice from the Ministry of Health on self-isolation and testing.

You can help MIT’s response and keep our whānau safe by informing your lecturer immediately if you test positive for COVID-19.

The institute is taking the following steps to make study and teaching as safe as possible:

ONLINE LEARNING

We are taking a cautious approach to returning teaching to the classroom. Currently, all learning that can be delivered online will be taught this way until at least April 4. Your lecturers will give you the specific details for your courses, so please make sure you check your emails and Canvas for any updates.

POSITIVE CASES ON CAMPUS

If a positive COVID case is detected on campus, MIT will contact students and staff who are considered Close Contacts with advice from Ministry of Health on self-isolating and testing.

SICKNESS

The best thing you can do to protect your health and the wellbeing of your household and the community is not coming to MIT if you are feeling unwell for any reason.

Instead, stay home and call either your GP or Healthline on 0800 611 116.

VACCINATION

Only students and staff who have been fully vaccinated are permitted on site at MIT under any setting of the ‘Traffic Light’ system.

CAPACITY LIMITS

We have rearranged some learning spaces to support physical distancing of one metre required on campus at Red.

MASKS

Masks must be worn when attending on-site activities. They are mandatory both inside and outside the classroom.

SCANNING IN

The NZ COVID Tracer app or manual sign in is mandatory on campus:

https://www.health.govt.nz/covid-19-novel-coronavirus/covid-19-resources-and-tools/nz-covid-tracer-app.

We understand this may be a worrying time for some students. If you have any questions or need to talk to someone, please reach out to your lecturer, or a Student Support advisor by calling 0800 696 487 or email [email protected]

International Students requiring assistance please call 0800 648 2273 or 022 067 8180.

I will be updating you regularly on our response to Omicron and what it means for your studies with us.

Ngā mihi,

Gus Gilmore, MIT Chief Executive
