LIFE AS A JUNIOR DOCTOR | DR KARAN BANKER

AUSS is excited to present Dr Karan Banker for an evening exploring the realities of life as a junior doctor and the journey towards a career in surgery. 🩺

Dr Banker is a junior doctor based in Auckland with experience across several surgical specialties and a particular interest in orthopaedic surgery, commencing his registrar training in the field next year.

Drawing on his experiences in clinical practice, research and teaching, Dr Banker will share practical advice, useful tips and an honest perspective on navigating early surgical training and life as a junior doctor.

Whether you’re considering a career in surgery, preparing for your own transition into the workforce, or simply curious about what lies ahead, this is an evening not to be missed!

Last week, some of our students took part in the first Trauma Evaluation and Management (TEAM®) Course to be held in New Zealand, at the University of Auckland.

Run over a single day and led by Professor Victor Kong and Dr Jonathan Ko, TEAM is the American College of Surgeons’ introductory trauma course for medical students. Built on the same principles as ATLS®, it takes students through the initial assessment of the injured patient using the xABCDE sequence — primary and secondary survey, airway, shock and haemorrhage control — through a mix of interactive lectures and clinical case scenarios.

It was a fantastic day, and a first for Aotearoa. We extend our sincere gratitude to the American College of Surgeons for making it possible, and to Professor Kong and Dr Ko for leading it.
