Auckland University Surgical Society

Auckland University Surgical Society We are dedicated to providing surgical exposure to medical students at the University of Auckland.

AUSS aims to give medical students at the University of Auckland an insight into surgery as a career. By holding information evenings, suturing workshops, and days in surgery with consultants around Auckland, AUSS promotes surgery as a career, and also gives students an insight into what it takes to become a surgeon, and what it's like once you're there. Anyone is welcome to join, even if you don't study medicine but are interested in getting into medical school!

Are you a final-year surg keen student starting to think about your next big hurdle - The GSSE?

Not sure where to start?

Don’t rely on Reddit for your advice, come along to GSSE 101 Webinar - Your Headstart to GSSE Prep, a collaboration with AUSS and DSAS.

We’ll be covering
- Exam overview
- Pros/Cons of different sitting times
- How to build a study plan
- Pitfalls that contribute to the ~41% fail rate
- Practically work through various study approaches

The session is led by Dr Yusuf Hassan, a General Surgical Registrar + Founder of GSSE Roadmap who has been through the overwhelm, the false starts, and the trial-and-error of figuring out what actually works.

AUSS + DSAS attendees will be provided an exclusive medical student offer to full GSSE Roadmap access to maximise your chances of passing first-time!

📆Event details: Online, Monday24th August 7-8:30pm NZST. Session link will be available upon registration

🎯Who it’s for: Primarily final year medical students - however all are welcome!

💡What you’ll get: Honest advice — the kind you’d hear post–paper rounds — on how to tackle the dreaded GSSE with clarity and confidence!

Last week, some of our students took part in the first Trauma Evaluation and Management (TEAM®) Course to be held in New Zealand, at the University of Auckland.

Run over a single day and led by Professor Victor Kong and Dr Jonathan Ko, TEAM is the American College of Surgeons’ introductory trauma course for medical students. Built on the same principles as ATLS®, it takes students through the initial assessment of the injured patient using the xABCDE sequence — primary and secondary survey, airway, shock and haemorrhage control — through a mix of interactive lectures and clinical case scenarios.

It was a fantastic day, and a first for Aotearoa. We extend our sincere gratitude to the American College of Surgeons for making it possible, and to Professor Kong and Dr Ko for leading it.

This will be the first of many. If you’re interested in attending a future TEAM course, please register your interest using the form below 👇
