It’s been another busy few weeks for our ELA students.

Students recently took part in the University of Auckland Market Day, exploring a range of student, staff and alumni businesses while connecting with the wider University community and practising their English.

Some students also enjoyed a spring visit to One Tree Hill, making the most of the cherry blossom season, taking photos with friends, and meeting some of the park’s farm animals.

It’s been a busy time outside the classroom for our ELA students. Recently, students joined AUSA and UoA Chinese Clubs for a day of cultural games, calligraphy, lacquer fan DIY, mooncakes and festival fun. Students also got creative in a hands-on candle-making workshop, choosing their own scents and making a candle to take home. Meanwhile, our Coffee and Conversation workshop provided a relaxed space to practise English and connect with other students. From cultural experiences to creative activities and casual conversations, there have been plenty of opportunities to get involved, make friends, and enjoy life beyond the classroom.

New Zealand will switch to daylight saving time this Sunday, 27 September.

At 2:00 am, the clocks will move forward one hour to 3:00 am.

That means one less hour of sleep, but longer and brighter evenings to enjoy Auckland!

Don’t forget to set your clocks forward before you go to bed on Saturday night.

ELA students recently took part in an engaging workplace simulation, putting their interview skills to the test in a real-world job search scenario.

Working in groups, some students stepped into the role of employers, introducing their companies and available positions, while others became job seekers, presenting their CVs and highlighting their skills and experience.

This interactive activity gave students the opportunity to practise their English communication skills, build confidence in job interviews, and gain valuable workplace experience in a supportive and enjoyable environment.

Our students recently enjoyed an Auckland adventure after class!

Travelling by train through the new City Rail Link, riding Auckland's longest escalator, and catching a ferry to Devonport, they experienced a unique journey across the city while practising English, exploring Auckland, and making unforgettable memories along the way.

A great day at ASPIRE 2026 for ELA professional staff. The conference challenged and inspired us, while highlighting practical ideas that can be applied in our daily work. It was wonderful to see our staff so engaged throughout the day and eager to put new ideas into practice. A particular highlight was reconnecting with former ELA student Jackson, now a postgraduate student in the Business School, who spoke on a student panel. It was fantastic to see him thriving in his studies and contributing to the conversation. Thank you to everyone involved in a fantastic event.

We were proud to celebrate this important milestone with our Pathway students, many of whom are now progressing to postgraduate study at the University of Auckland.

A special thank you to our guest speaker, Dr Marco Eugster, Director of Master of Applied Finance at the Business School, who shared valuable insights on the importance of networking, collaboration, and using AI as a tool to support learning rather than relying on it.

We wish all of our graduates every success as they begin the next stage of their academic journey.

A wonderful start to the week at ELA as we welcomed students from around the world to our General English and Pathway programmes.

During the morning, our General English students joined orientation and began their Auckland study experience. We were also delighted to welcome back a student from Mexico for his third study experience with ELA.

In the afternoon, our Pathway students gathered for orientation in one of the brand-new lecture theatres in the newly renovated Old Choral Hall, before coming together for a group photo on the historic steps outside its iconic entrance.

This week, ELA held TWO Student of the Month celebrations, and it was wonderful to see our students getting involved with such enthusiasm.

Each class nominated one outstanding student. From the nominees, one overall Student of the Month was then selected by a random draw.

Congratulations to Jangwon and Shinyu on being named our Students of the Month!

A big congratulations also goes to every student who was nominated. We hope you continue to make the most of your ELA journey and create many more great memories along the way!
