In the fairy tale Goldilocks was talking about porridge. Here, we're talking about planets with the ideal conditions for supporting life as we know it.
The Department of Physics, University of Auckland, along with Auckland Astronomical Society and the Beatrice Hill Tinsley Lecture Trust, is excited to welcome Dr Natalie Batalha to the faculty for a public lecture entitled 'A Planet for Goldilocks: The search for evidence of life beyond Earth'.
Named one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People this year, Dr Batalha is an astrophysicist at NASA Ames Research Center and she's the project scientist for NASA's Kelper Mission. In 2011 Dr Batalha led the team responsible for the discovery of Kepler-10b, the mission's first confirmation of a rocky planet outside our solar system. And now you can hear her tell us about the terrestrial-sized planets that populate the galaxy, as well as exotic worlds unlike anything that exists in the solar system.

The Department of Physics at the University of Auckland invites applications for the position of Professional Teaching Fellow, a teaching-focused academic role to deliver and support introductory classes at the Foundation and Stage One levels. Duties will include instruction, coordinating tutorials and teaching laboratories, and participating in the delivery of the Tuakana programme, which supports Māori and Pacific students.

The ideal candidate will hold a degree in physics, physics education, or a closely related field, and demonstrate significant experience with modern, research-informed approaches to physics education.

The Department of Physics is undertaking a major, multi-year revision of its undergraduate pedagogy and curriculum with the goal of producing a truly superb undergraduate experience in physics.

[FOR PHYSICS STUDENTS -- THE 300 SECTOR IS OPEN AND WORKING AS USUAL, BUT SEVERAL PHYSICS COURSES WITH LECTURES IN OTHER PARTS OF CAMPUS WILL BE AFFECTED]

28July, 1.20pm.

A power outage is impacting parts of the City Campus (parts of sectors 100,200 and 400). Vector expect power to return progressively later today.

We are cancelling lectures, tutorials and other teaching in all affected facilities for the rest of the afternoon. Lectures and other teaching in all other buildings are continuing as normal.

The Early Childhood Centre in Alten Road is closing. Symonds Street and the Kohanga Reo are unaffected.

For all cancelled lectures we will advise if they will be rescheduled and your lecturer will update you at your next scheduled lecture.
