This CyberSmart Week, we're offering some tips on how to keep yourself as safe as possible online.

Discern: Don’t believe everything you see (or hear)

With the expansion of artificial intelligence and other tools that can create content in an instant, the risk of fake information being shared has never been higher.
Are you certain the content is genuine? People can easily create fake images or even voices to resemble someone you know. If in doubt, check with the person or organisation using another means, e.g. phone call to their publicly listed number.
Does the content align with your expectations? Would your parish priest really be asking you to send money or gift cards to him?
Is someone trying to make something seem particularly urgent? Malicious actors often use urgency to lower your guard against usual checks and balances.
If you are looking to share content, is the source reliable? Most online platforms have tools to help identify trusted entities, e.g. verified ticks.
WHAT NOW? Have a plan: Who said it? Where did it come from? Can I verify it? Should I share it?
