A solemn day of remembrance,
For the ANZACs who sacrificed.

Today,
Let us remember the tragedy of conflict.
Let us remember those who lost their lives.
Let us remember those who were injured.
Let us remember the strength and courage of all who fought to protect their country.

We hope you’ve had a fabulous Easter weekend! We all deserved a good break to recharge our physiological batteries.

Doesn’t our Automotive student from Kelston campus look all refreshed and energetic for the week ahead —and especially dashing in those safety goggles? 😎

Ideally, we should automatically be switched back on when the work day begins —just as easily as shutting down when the workweek ends. 😆

However, if you’re feeling a tad run-down today, here are five tips for making it through work:

1) Stay hydrated throughout the day.
2) Incorporate essential nutrients in your diet —eggs, spinach, nuts, bananas, oranges, kumara, and salmon.
3) Stay positive —we are all human beings after all, not robots! Don’t beat yourself up because you are not as productive. Give yourself a pat on the shoulder because you made it to work today!
4) Do not compromise quality for quantity —work on tasks that require less brain power today and make them a priority tomorrow when you feel better.
5) Take frequent breaks —findings reveal that daydreaming is good for your mind, memory, and enhances creativity.

Cheers!

Fun fact of the day:

According to 60 Million Gingernuts: A Book of New Zealand Records, Wellington’s Old Government Buildings is the largest wooden building in New Zealand. On top of that, it is the largest in the southern hemisphere, and second-largest wooden building in the world after Japan’s Great Buddha Hall. It served as government offices right up until 1990 before undergoing major restoration. Today, it houses the Law Faculty of Victoria University of Wellington.

Kauri timber was the predominant building material —a native softwood that is most renowned of all New Zealand’s timber trees.

Historic buildings provide a glimpse into the past, lending character while serving new practical purposes in today’s modern society.

Wouldn’t it be lovely to be able to eat the fruits (and vegetables) of your labour? Or admire the flora and fauna that blossomed under your care?

Building a garden from scratch may seem like a daunting task. However, it can provide a remarkable sense of accomplishment, especially when you reap the rewards of your perseverance.

The big question is often ‘how and where do I even begin’?

Part-time classes for Skills Update’s New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture (Level 3) begin in May. Over the course of 10 months, you will learn all about plants and how they work. Upon completing the programme, you will become an expert in growing, maintaining, protecting, and propagating plants.

It is the first step towards a career in Horticulture. It is also suitable for anyone with interest in horticulture and who want to grow plants more successfully.

If you are interested in growing plants but you have little or limited knowledge of horticulture, then this will be the programme for you.

Are you ready to transform your outdoor living spaces?

It breaks our heart to learn that 137 young Kiwis took their own lives last year, and 3,500 attempted su***de. Mental health is a major concern.

On ‘Gumboot Friday’, Skills Update team members put their gumboots on to "walk through the mud” with those facing mental health challenges.

Importantly, we stand up against the stigma of mental health.

To those who are struggling, you are not in this alone. It is okay not to be okay. You are amazing in your own way —remember that!!

Never let the opinions of others become the measure of your self-worth.

On the 10 of April 2019, our Commercial Road Transport students took the concept of sharing and caring to the road; through the ‘Driver On-Bike’ workshop conducted by Share The Road (STR).

STR is run by the New Zealand Transport Agency funded Cycling Action Network (CAN). Their key focus is on improving the safety of road users, especially when it comes to vulnerable cyclists around heavy vehicles.

At Skills Update we acknowledge that being a good truck driver does not merely involve gaining a qualification. That’s why our curriculum extends beyond the basic practical and theoretical aspects of driving and fosters positive driving behaviours amongst our trainee drivers. We believe positive behaviours on roads will help reduce road injuries and fatalities.

Thanks to the workshop, our trainee drivers have gained a deeper understanding of cyclists’ perspectives and needs when sharing the road. Cyclists can also attend an STR workshop to learn useful techniques and skills for safer riding, and gain confidence while riding on busy roads.

Sharing the road is about caring for the safety of all road users.

Drive and ride safe everyone! Cheers.

Skills Update team was thrilled to participate in the Diversity Festival 2019 last weekend!

We were delighted to meet new people from diverse backgrounds —each and every one of them contributed to the vibrant event that it was. We also enjoyed singing and dancing along to their traditional tunes, and expanding our taste buds with a wide range of cuisines. In no way did the wet weather dampen our spirits!

A big thank you to those who came by our booth to say hi! We look forward to another amazing time at the next event. Keep a lookout on our Facebook feed for upcoming events!
