“It was a wonderful day even after I fell out of the kayak and realized my phone was in my pocket. It was so much fun to kayak and swim to places to get rubbish. We ended up with four to five rubbish bags, mostly filled with plastic things – as well as a few shoes!” says Mo Pei☀️

Mo was one of four international students completing an Employability Award who decided to put their hands up and volunteer for the , a non-profit trust working to clean up coastlines and waterways and educate people on the consequences of littering 🌊

Karthik Purushotham also signed up to help aquatic creatures under threat from the presence of plastic and micro plastic in the oceans 🐠

“Kayaking to look for the rubbish was a highlight on the day, as well as being able to swim in such clear water. It was so good to do something to reduce that impact. Volunteering is a way to get actively involved in activities and encourages me to develop new skill sets as an international student” 🤝

The Employability Awards offer AUT students the opportunity to improve their employability skills, connect with other people and communities, and have fun through volunteering and leadership 🫶
