As part of the upcoming Karangahape Art Weekend, RM presents ‘Signature Move’ a one-day performance hosted at RM!
3 Samoa House Lane, Auckland C*D. (Invite attached.)
Riffing on the logic of the executive order, ‘Signature Move’ interrogates the intersections of democracy, legislation, and individual agency within bureaucratic systems. At the centre of the work is the Very Large Pen, an oversized felt-tip marker with which participants are invited to sign a contract with the artist. Here, the signature operates as both performance and paradox: an endlessly repeated mark that strives for sameness while inevitably producing difference. Gathered and exhibited as an accumulating archive, the signatures become a record of collective participation, foregrounding questions of authority, authenticity, and the potential power of collective action in democratic life.

𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘶𝘯 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘦 is an exhibition of work developed by Gregory Thomas and Shelley Simpson in response to their respective art residencies in Iceland. From February - April 2025 Thomas was at Skaftfell Art Center in Seyðisfjörður, while in May 2025 Simpson was at The Creative Center in Stöðvarfjörður. Both residencies are only a few hours’ drive from each other on the east coast of Iceland.

𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘶𝘯 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘦 includes works both made in Iceland and completed in Tāmaki Makaurau in response to their experiences abroad. The exhibition spans an array of lens-based imaging; from analogue cyanotype, lumen, and pinhole photography, to intaglio, risograph, and screen-prints, as well as moving image.
