"Sanderson and mothermother are delighted to present an AFTER SESSIONS EVENT with Hettie Judah, convened by Kirsty Baker.
Presented in association with the exhibition MOTHERMOTHER at Sanderson, this special event brings together acclaimed British writer and curator Hettie Judah with four exhibiting Aotearoa New Zealand artists for an evening of conversation, reflection and exchange.
Convened by celebrated Aotearoa based writer and curator Kirsty Baker, the session will open with a welcome and introduction to Hettie Judah (curator of Acts of Creation: On Art and Motherhood and author of How to Enter the Art World… After and How Not to Excluce Artist Mothers (and other parents), Sanderson Gallery, the mothermother collective and the exhibition, before introducing the participating artists Hana Pera Aoake, Sarah Smuts-Kennedy, Holli McEntegart and Inga Fillary.
Each artist will then present their research and personal narratives that underpin their work, providing insight into the ideas, histories and experiences that have shaped their practice.
Framing the discussion within the unique context of Aotearoa's contemporary art landscape, Kirsty will then offer reflections and discussion prompts with Hettie, around practising within New Zealand's close-knit cultural ecosystem - its opportunities, complexities and distinct position as a creative community.
Responding to these presentations, Hettie Judah will draw connections between the artists' work and the themes explored throughout her writing.
Bringing together international and local voices, the evening offers an opportunity to consider artistic practice, motherhood, care, community and creative sustainability through dialogue that is grounded in Aotearoa New Zealand's context while connecting to a broad global conversation."
